Who has tried the infamous Lyman 429360?

I tried two different double cavity Lyman 429360 molds loaded in the .44 Spl & .44 Magnum. On paper targets I'd get a nice 3 shot group, with the other 3 shots being many inches from that group in no real pattern. I tried many powders and loads that worked well with other cast bullets in the .44 Caliber. I communicated with "old timers" (no offense) that had done the same. One even had the front driving band enlarged...he too never got it to shoot accurately

Here is a nice article about that bullet/mold...

For those that woudl like to take the challenge and try one.... (BTW--I am NOT the seller!!!)

Wally, My experience with-360 was the same as yours and Beagle's. Although the mould cast easily, its droppings, even when sized to fit my Ruger SBH grouped erratically. I.e., several grouped tightly @ 25 yd., while the others scattered around the target. Needless to say, I sold that one shortly thereafter.

Kind of amazing how that bullet worked----as I mentioned many would hit the target, but the misses were absolutely terrible. You see these molds on E-Bay quite often... It makes a beautiful bullet that casts well. Such a shame they don't shoot well. I wonder if anybody ever got it to shoot accurately?

Maybe that narrow front drive band does weird things. Dunno.

I have 4 nominally-44-caliber moulds on hand--a SAECO #446 (200 grain FN/plain base), a Lyman #429421, a Lyman #429244, and an Accurate 250 grain FN/GC. All shoot wonderfully, no issues with any of them.

I thought of that as well. The Lyman 429214 also has a narrow front DB...and it shoots spectacularly for me in all my .44 Caliber guns.

I have heard of the legend of 429360, and I even have a mould for it but have never cast with it at all, and probably won't. Mine is mismarked from the factory, so it lives the easy life in storage with the rest of my misfit moulds.

Amazing that you have a mold that you've never once used! Why did you not ever try it out?

Had one years ago, it still may be here in the debris field. Made great looking bullets that didn't group worth spit. I never knew why. Do some of our learned bullet designers know what the problem is?

Reminds me a little of the Lyman 575494 minie. Tried as I might I couldn’t get them to group. 3 in a little cluster then one 5” out at 50 yards. Finally gave up on them.

Some designs just don’t shoot for squat I guess.

I have many moulds, not all of them get used at all. I also seem to have a weakness for early Ideal single cavity moulds. It's actually a disease :). I have a half dozen or so Ideal single HPs & HBs that need to go to Erik at Hollowpoint Mold for replacement HP pins or base pins.

Looks to me all will eventually end up on E-Bay...it's later than you think! I have a few Lyman SC molds and a solitary Lee mold...I still use them. When I first got into casting I bought a half dozen Lee SC molds. I have some very pleasant memories casting with them.

I have considered selling everything off at times. All I've ever really sold were some of my plain vanilla "user" grade moulds. I've only sold one of the collectible moulds and that was because I couldn't get any solid information on it and I got frustrated and didn't want to look at it anymore. Solid information on the old Ideals if hard to get because of Lymans antics the first time they sold out. All we can do is guess at the introduction and manufacture dates based on the old Lyman Handbooks, vs. the individual moulds characteristics & features.

Safe queens.
Some have handguns or rifles, others have moulds.
