Why did I shoot #5?

4 shots into one ragged hole at 50 yards, then the loose nut behind the trigger gets all twitter-pated and yanks the last shot out of the group! Grumble, grumble, grumble...... (.30-30 Contender, Lyman 311041 HP, 173 grains, sized .310", moly lube, 32.0 grains of Varget, CCI 200 primer, 1700 fps).

But is it repeatable?

I hate when this kind of thing happens. Makes me dislike 5 shot groups, or at least the ones that are going really well.

Seems most of the time the worst shot of my groups is the last one. Guess I'll never learn to quit when I'm ahead. Four shot groups count right?

Well, ummm....how shall I put it.

I aspire to do so terrible. That's not a light load &, I've never done well with a contender. The hook on the trigger guard being my only complaint with them, & why I don't have one.

I'd like to see how you experienced fellers hold it while shooting. Hand placement?

Feel your pain bro.

This happened last week, I was checking the scope after a reinstall.

Only had 5 rounds loaded up.

It was the fourth round as usual.

Rock Island 03, not a hand gun but what's the diff.

Is it repeatable? Time will tell. I had a series of test loads to try out today -- 10 rounds of each, the first 5 of each went over the chronograph, and the second 5 went downrange for group. That flyer was literally the last round of the day (obviously my concentration was waning....). I will load up more of that load and see how it does.

i was being sarcastic, is the pulled shot repeatable.
That is a nice load. I wonder how much more velocity you would get from a 14 inch barrel? I have always thought of a 30-30 as an ideal cartridge for the Contender.
Why I don't play with my Contender more I can't say, I certainly should.

Slightly off topic,maybe.
I really do not understand Contenters.
How do they burn that much powder in
Such a short barrel?
And how do they achieve that vel. with slow rifle powders?
I could see 4198 or RX7.
I know they do SHOOT.
For several weeks there was a guy
Shooting next to me using one in 223,he was nailing golf balls at 100 yds.

As to Contenders, if you don't own one and want to keep your $, my advice is don't buy the 1st one. The " Contender Thing " will turn you into a pauper. Ask me how I know.

I think I understand what you are trying to convey Ben.
There is one for sale at a LGS.
Sort of a package deal ,comes w/five barrels.
Had one guy trying to shoot skeet with his 410 barrel.
IMO they have and still are really cool guns.
And now that we have better and more choices in scopes,as well as CB's they can really shine.
Only down side apparently is they don't compensate for human error.

Freebullet, I don't know how others do it but I use the hook on the bottom of the trigger guard as a rest for the middle finger of my support hand. I kinda rest my support hand index finger along the side of the bottom loop of the guard.

The shot that always gets me seems to be #7 of 10. I get excited and lose concentration, it's almost a physical feeling in the back of my head that tells me I'm going to have an involutary twitch in my hold during the follow through. I've been known to take a short rest after six, get up from the bench, shake it off, and get right back to the group. Sometimes that helps, sometimes I get a four shot group off the edge of the first six. Mind games!

Part of this " game " we enjoy so much is pure science / physics.

After we have that out of the way, it turns mental real quick.

And Ben that is why people can not always buy their way to the top.
Although it helps this sport is not ALL about the equipment.

So my advise shoot the fifth or seventh shot first.;)

Haha! Unless you're hunting though, of course. Glen put the first four in essentially the same hole....which is a feat in itself with cast bullets. Much of the time the first one is off, or the first two will touch and the third be off. How many antelope in a row does one really need to shoot in the ear canal?

No one can top me for blowing a perfectly good clover leaf group! I can do it equally as well with cast or jacketed too.
