Out yesterday to the bench. Put 52 rounds through the rifle. First time off the bench with this load. Sometime ago I spoke with the IMR tech by phone for a friend wanting a reduced load for his 300 Ultra Mag. I was told to load the case to 50% of capacity with 4895 & any bullet. He also said any cartridge which uses 4895 could be loaded the same.

The 30-06 case holds roughly 60 grains of this power + or - a dab. So I loaded 30 grains & seated a 311284 bullet just off the rifling. I fired a few 3 shot 100 yard groups & the average was 2". I wasn't comfortable so I reset my rest, hung a new target with 1" dots & shot 3 groups.

Creeker...that 9/16" group wasn't a fluke with that bullet and load....however I would try dropping down to 29 grs..or use 30 grs 4064...it's a bit slower...

Beautiful set up BTW..and good shooting...Dan

I just roughly set the powder measure & it was more like 30.5. I purchased this powder a couple years ago. It was in a heavy duty plastic bag in a metal ammo box. I know the old gentleman. He said the powder came in a 55 gallon drum so I have 'bout 13 pounds of it so that's why I'm using it. I have some 4350 under the bench if I take a notion to get serious. The little rifle has a floated barrel but needs bedded & the action screws set with a torque wrench. Might do pretty good. And thanks for the advice. Just happen to have some 4064.

BTW when I got home I found the front sight loose enough to rattle. Guess that didn't help either.

That is some fine shooting and some fine glass sitting on top of your rifle.

Creeker, I have also shoot a M70 in '06, a pre-64 with a Lyman Target Spot scope.

The 311284 shoots 3/4" at 100 using 25.0 RL 7. Nice powder for accurate cast shooting if you get the chance to try it.

Chris--many thanks for the RL-7 data. I have a Husq 98 Mauser in 30-06 that dotes upon the Lee 200 grain bullet, and all powders tried to date have been at least "good" with it. RL-7 will get a test-drive shortly.

In the fall I helped a newbie put together some jax loads for the same rifle. They are real nice shooters. His trigger was adjustable & he didn't even know it. For some reason it was as tight as she goes. After a trigger adjustment & a load work up it was shooting one hole. I couldn't help but, wonder what it would do with cast.

Looks like yours does well. Real nice setup.
