Winchester primers are hotter!

This was in a 308 using 225gr cast with gas check, 43gr of IMR 8133.

CCI LRM. Average 1888, SD - 15
Win LRM Average 2046 - SD - 55 +158 fps

Brass was the same for all loads and freshly annealed.

Not sure what’s going on with the SD. I shot 6 rounds of the CCI, 5 of Win.

A buddy of mine bought his reloading gear out of cold storage and set it up in my heated woodshop. He had 50 Win LRM primers in his “stuff”!

WLP are definitely hotter than most LP, but they don't make a magnum LP so I guess they just split the difference with cup thickness and whatever else. I agree the WLRM are for sparking 748, 760, and 780 as they are called for even in Speer manuals.

My understanding has always been that Win primers are Std/Mag - ie Mag. As of internet time, I have considered them as magnum level by default. Don't have any anymore/shot them up long ago. And at same time Feds were very available and mostly what I have now.

Wish Federal's were available here; all we have a Remington and CCI.

I’m seeing Federal primers, just last week in Bedford PA a shop had Federal, Winchester and CCI. Smalls were 9 cents and large were 12 cents each, by the 1000.

I know where there are Fed LPP and SPP - for $110/K! But that is as cheap or cheaper than I am seeing them online!

Another shop also has (had?) Fed SRPs for $80. Not bad at all considering

Winchester primers use powdered aluminum as a metallic fuel to scatter hot, incandescent particles through the charge to aid ignition by increasing heat, without increasing explosive force. Necessary in military primer mix to pass cold box testing with spherical powders. Originally developed to meet high altitude aircraft auto cannon requirements.

Shot the Federal 215 primer loads the other day.

Average fps - 2032, SD - 41, 100 yd 5 shot group was 1 3/8”.

14 fps slower aver than the Winchester but 144 faster than the CCI.

I think I’m going to get some more Federal primers because I can. The Winchesters are impossible to find and I only had about 50. Although, I did get about 20 more today with my RCBS press find. But still, 70 isn’t enough to depend on down the road so I’m going to stick with the Federals. The powder IMR 8133, is another issue, I’ve heard it’s been discontinued. Doesn’t look like it on their site but thought I read it somewhere.
