The bear situation was presumed to be well inside 50yd probably inside 50 ft .
A 1-1/4oz of shot is going to make a mess . 400+ pellets even spread across 24" isn't going to leave a lot of really big gaps . 24 60 gr balls at 12-1300 fps aren't really going to be a love tap either . A .690 RB is real close to 600 gr and again at 12-1300 fps and a 3/4" hole ..... It's not 45-70-500 at 1400 fps out of an 1895G or 86' Win but it ain't exactly something Catfish hunter would have stopped in his prime over home plate ...... (That was the catcher with the 200+ batting average wasn't it ?)

The biggest stick you can wield that you'll carry 100% is always the right answer .

The 22 LR and an assortment of 25 , 30 ,and 32 cal Winchesters have racked up a pile of grizz and polar bears but I think we would all agree that the charge and confuse hope I'm fast enough it doesn't fall on me brain shot via the larynx isn't the safest way to deal with them . The game is all about disconnecting or disabling the brain from the parts that slap , rip , tear , and gnaw as quickly as possible . A 300# black is not the same animal as a 600# brown or an 800# grizz or polar . Saying they are is like saying a Cape Buffalo is the same as an American bison they might cousins but there's a reason for the 375 H&H and 458 WM with 400 & 500 gr FP bronze solids . Sure Bell killed a bunch of elephants with a 7×57 , but , it was a lifetime job , and his first one wasn't with one and surplus 175 gr FMJ either .

Yup all true. I’m just giving my perspective from my region of the planet.. l keep a 44 mag carbine with heavies in it behind my door for what’s around here. When I go to areas with browns or grizzlies I’ll carry a 45 caliber rifle. Just don’t like shotguns.

I've only hunted and fished in large bear areas twice, and once saw bear tracks frozen in mud. Those tracks were as wide as my size 12 Caribou Sorels were long. That CZ-550 in 9.3 x 62 gave considerable comfort while sleeping in a wall tent on straw bales.

Black bears are pretty thick in our local mountains. We have had a few close encounters of the furred kind during our jaunts in their neighborhoods, only one of which needed cover by my Redhawk. The above-listed CZ-550 joined the family soon afterward.

catfish hunter was a pitcher, big lanky 90* elbow thrower back in the 80's.
i think your thinking of johnny bench as the catcher.

At the casting bench in the sky. RIP Bret.
Guy up here busted a long horn bull (Texas Longhorn cattle that is) in the face and neck with a duck load of 4's at about 40 feet. Didn't do anything but po the bull and make a mess. I wouldn't put a lot of faith in birdshot against a bull, bear, etc.

Tough and hard. Pic of the bullet I scrunched into the case didn't come out well but nose is sort of re-formed to the RCBS seater, GC has a groove in the base, base band is a little larger. 1/3 308w LC 05 neck is torn and pushed back to the shoulder! Cast from 4% & Cu enhanced about a year ago. Don't hunt deer but should go right through a hog/bear.

I was 14 when the 70s closed it's kind of a blur now ......... Either way . :) ;) pitcher or catcher , I'd bet even a new high tech glove wouldn't stop one .

I spent more time with the Joe Green , Rosie Grier , types ....I just never really was into sports .

i only remember a few of the players from over the years.
i'm most definitely not a baseball fan, bad enough so that when i lived in salt lake i had a key to the back gate of the baseball stadium there and could come and go as i pleased.
i showed up in time for work and left when i was done even though i could have attended every game, practice, party, whatever.

chuckle Bret.
if he'd have used a 22 on the other end i can assure the Bull's reaction would have been much different... LOL
shot placement is as always key.

yep, been there for over a hundred years.
when they were the Gulls they had the longest winning streak in Pro Ball, a record that stood for like 20 years.[maybe still does]
Bill Murray [the actor] was the owner when i was working there.

I saw those claws, and immediately thought of the comic book character "Wolverine". Man, those are some fearsome weapons!!

Yeah the Wolverine a piker, this guy picks his teeth with those claws. Batch of can openers on each paw.
