Straight ATF?Nothing added?
We use 50/50,ATF..mineral spirits as sort of a snake oil in the shop for various chores. It stays mixed(emulsion).Use it some on guns for general this and that. Also cleans plastic and rubber on the shop truck exterior...doh.Hillbilly Nu-finish.
You're running it at the end of the day? down your brrls. As a protectant or as a cleaner? Thanks,BW
Yes, mainly because of the high humidity we have here in the south. I use straight atf oil(dex/merc from auto zone) after shooting and run 1 wet patch straight through the bore and out the bbl., then take it off before pulling the rod back through the bore.
Before shooting again i run a couple dry patches back and forth in the chamber, then 1 dry patch straight through the bore and out the end. I take the patch off before pulling the rod back through the bore...first shots in the group everytime from MY rifles.
It works the same for my brother in CO. in his H&R 35 whelen.
If i run more than 1 tight fitting dry patch through the bore, all bets are off on the first shot....1 tight dry patch is the charm!
I found through trial and error what works best for me.
I have found if i leave the bbl. in the fired condition, that BLL will still put the first shot centered in the group and Ben's Red will be very close to centered "somewhere" in the group.
As i said, i use the atf oil because of high humidity in my area. I'm really not so concerned with the bbl.(as Ben's Red and BLL takes care of that even in the fired condition) as i am with the chamber.
Still, i use the oil through the bbl. too if i'm going to store it for anytime...just makes me feel better and it works.
I rub the outside of all the metal parts of the rifle with atf oil too, but use a lighter oil for the inner workings of the bolt and trigger, just because the atf is so thick.
This works with BLL, Ben's Red, and also has worked well with Fiver's Simple lube.
I won't go hunting not knowing where my first shot will go...that's why i'm so hooked on Ben's lubes....well that plus the tight groups.
