1903 Springfield MK 1 Battle Sights and The NOE 30 Hunter

Finally had a chance to get together with a friend of mine who has some absolutely beautiful single shot rifles.

It was a glorious day for our trip to the range.

He was trying out his Low Wall in 32-40 and I decided to remove the Lyman 48 from my Mark 1 and shoot using the peep in ladder sight ..

Brave souls us..

There was plenty of chatter between the tables, mostly on the subject of how ridiculous this exercise was for a couple of duffers like us.

100 yds open battle sights and Lyman tang sights..

Well we were half right...he was breach seating his plain base bullets..trying to remember just what the process was ...finally got that down..

Me ....I couldn't remember my setting for the 100 yd target and my reloads using the ladder sight so I just took a semi educated guess....

My friend did very well...I would show you pictures but being of age he left his targets at the range..once he settled in he was getting 1 to 1 1/4" 5 shot groups..Right on !!

Me..I guess my memory was serving me well as far as the settings were concerned..the first group
went slightly high on the piece of paper I use as impact impact area under the target ....

I readjusted the sights to shoot slightly lower...great center of paper..

Second group was not so good..I had a hard time because I thought my eyes were causing me problems as the hole in the ladder sight looked like a cookie with a bite out of it...h-u-u-u-m..

After shooting the second group I changed the windage to shoot to the right ..the group improved....YES!!!

THEN ...being on a roll I readjusted past center to shoot left...well I adjusted just a little too much.. that group I had to leave at the club because it was on the backer board...but I did get a picture of it with a repair dot from a "shoot and see" target for comparison purposes...

Then I got to thinking ..why did my eyes improve on the third and fourth groups?

Sights looked perfectly round..well this is where the old duffer part comes in....
please don't make fun of me..I looked through the spotting scope to check out the targets again and guess what..there it was a short wide pine bush ,just off of center to my line of sight for the second target...
yup my friends the second group was shot through a pine tree...that what was causing the peep to look like it did....:confused::confused::confused:

There are days when it 's good to have old friends around that understand the situation...

Hopefully I can post some pictures...

Thanks guys...I think it speaks more about these fine old pieces..
People these days just don't understand what they are capable of...those groups are much larger than what is or was expected of them at 300 yds...yes that's correct..300 yds..
Check out some of the old records of factory
Test with guys shooting off benches..unbeliveable...

All I was trying to do today was get consist white between the front post and the target...it has been a while since I have used factory sights...quite a while..

BTW ...not a bad bullet either.

While I have no quality or pristine milsurps, I have no doubts that all of them
that I do own are capable of man size targets at 300 with grunt rifles! We
are soft today bycomparison to the infantry grunt of WWI. Don't have a
garand but only becauseI don't need a semi auto. However I did quite well
with my issue garand in the late 50's out to and including 500 yds.

Paul..i'be had quite a few Garands...can't stand the dang things..but have a lot of respect for them...

And every one knows they don't shoot well....;);););)

I did fall in love with the M1A...but like the AR...I have better things to do with my time than chase brass..

Agree on chasing brass! I will stick with bolt and single shot rifles. Do own a few pistols.
Shot 100 rds of 9mm yesterday. Found about 85 of them. If I shot 100 380's out of my
little LCP, would be lucky if I found 75 of them. Don't shoot that one much!!!

Sounds like you found your latest brush gun quicksilver. :)

BTW they do make brass catchers fellas. Extractor claws & ejectors can be tuned to put your brass in a neat little pile too.

I like them all.

Dan,
You sure can shoot those open sights! Great shooting! I'm glad you got a photo of your backer board group! That is a real winner.
I recently was out at the 100yd range with the 8mm GEW ( Aperture front and rear) Trying to put all you have taught me into practice....sadly I have a long way yet to go to be able to see consistently at 100 as I can at 50yds. I go from 1" groups at 50yd to 5 inch groups at 100yd! So seeing your 100 yd open sight groups ....well that's really impressive!

Fb...my national match AR is tuned..and will put them in a coffee can at about 2 o'clock...
Wish everyone would do that....hate having brass dumped all over me at the matches..especially while shooting prone..

I have a rule- If your hot brass hits me, I'm keeping it.

The worst brass thrower ever for me was a colt defender. New from the box it threw brass at your face & in a 25' circle around you. After a couple rounds of adjusting/testing it would throw in a 2' circle @3-4 o'clock. Much better than at your eyeball or forehead.

Sorry for the drift, had to stick up for autoloaders a little.:D

I do enjoy milsurps and hope to play with more. Definitely enjoy hearing about them & your results.

Hey FB..don't get me wrong ..out of necessity I have gone through the M1's,M1A's ,AR's,1911's (12 of them) and my Pardini..
Not to mention for fun a BAR
Oh and about 16 Remington 1100's, with a few Browning A5's thrown in.
Then there where the M1 carbines
I haven't mentioned the 1022"s have i....

Maybe we should start a thread about the hot brass between the eyeglass frame and temple..or the 45 brass piling up on the rim of a cowboy hat..

There is a drift stronger than a full moon tide..

Shooting on a prone rapid fire line of young Marines, you soon learn a hot
06 round down the back of your neck dictates that you fire with a towel
around the back of the neck. Only takes one hot round to teach a big big
lesson in reality. Did love shooting a BAR, but heavy to tote.
