225438 in Hornet

Dropped hammer on a 225438 for a Hornet. Nice little squirrel rig, G1 Contender (IIRC) and a 21" tapered barrel. I hope to be able to use this bullet in a Winchester low wall that started out as a 22 short, then was rechambered into a K-Hornet.

The 225415 isn't happy in the 22 short twist.

I had some decent results in 22 Hornet with #225438 in the recent past, to include higher velocity with fair accuracy. 9.0 grains of 2400, Rem 6-1/2 primers, W-W brass partial-full-length-sized. Castings were in Lino type, and scaled to 1/2 of 1% of mean weight (42.2 grains). 2450 FPS, 1.4"-1.7" 5-shotters at 100 yards. Most shots stayed inside 3" at 200 yards.

When researching the loads for the Hornet, a number of threads opined that the 6 1/2 primer doesn't move the bullet prior to the powder igniting, which is a good thing. Spendy, though....

Not sure what the difference is with the Rem 6-1/2 caps, but there is no doubt about improvement in performance in the 22 Hornet, 25/20, 30 Carbine, and 32/20. Flyers pretty much disappeared, and groups got a bit smaller overall. The only thing I've read is that the 6-1/2 was developed to cater to the small-case rifle rounds of this caliber class I listed, while the 7-1/2 was designed for the 222-223 class of calibers. I have used VERY FEW Remington primers during my 40+ years of metallic reloading, and they have always been hard to find in my area of southern California--irrespective of component droughts or maker mood swings. I get mine at the Big Reno Gun Show, which I attend about every 18 months or so. Miwall usually has them at their station along the back wall of the exhibit hall.

I haven't tried small pistol primers in the Hornet or other like calibers. I was always concerned about higher pressures piercing their softer cup metal. Maybe that is unfounded, but that is how I've proceeded to date. Perhaps the Rem 6-1/2 combines rifle primer cup strength with pistol priming mixture intensity. Dunno.

I also like the 6 1/2 Rem for jacketed, but SP for cast does better for
me accuracy wise in Hornet and K Hornet. Like the 6 1/2s for 223 and
222 for jacketed.

Opened the box, and ... no .225 H&I die, czeched the invoice, and it isn't on it. Snap. Oh well, I suppose that I will call down the power of Capitalism by shaking the rubber chicken, sprinkle a drink libation of coffee, and flourish the plastic yet again... It worked the last time I tried...
