311299 Plain Base

A plain base 202 grain, .30 cal. cast bullet that is " growing on me " is the 311299.
Mine is the NOE Version.
1 cavity is g/c'd the other is plain base ( done by Al at NOE ).
Mine produces a nose of .301" and bands of .312 ( I size to .311" )
The plain base version if shot below 1,500 fps is amazingly accurate.

I cast about 200 of them today.
They are sized .311" , lubed with Carnuba Blue, and rolled in BLL.
I shot this bullet out of my Handi Rifle, 30-30 Win. a few days ago.
The load was 8.0 of Blue Dot and the 311299 plain base , sized .311" with a large pistol primer.
5 rounds chewed out a ragged hole at 50 yards.

Nice, Ben! I shot a lot of this in a 2-groove Springfield. the 311299 always shot just a bit better than the 311284.

Ben, would you have an estimate of velocity for that load of Blue Dot?

No I really don't .
I'd been shooting 7.0 of B'Eye , the 8.0 gr. load of B-Dot certainly seemed to have quite a bit of " zip " to it.

I believe that I have the same mold (NOE 311-202 GC & PB), and have been working with the GC bullet. Have shot it in a few of my rifles and yesterday had a pleasant experience with this gas checked bullet. I size them to .309 and use Josh's aluminum GC, lube is the old 50/50. I have been in quest of a heavy 30 cal cast bullet and load to shoot at distances 100 yards and greater. Most all my testing with this bullet so far has been at 100 yards. I loaded test lots of ammo in 10 round lots and usually fire two 5 shot groups. They were loaded in LC 88 308 cases that have been worked over with neck turning, trimming and so on. The primer used is the Federal 210 and the powder SR-4759. Charge weights of 17 & 18 grains were assembled. The 100 yard test target for the 17 & 18 grain loads are attached. After the 18 grain target was shot I fired 3 more rounds of the 18 grain charge at another aim point. They cut a nice group that is about 5/8s of an inch. I plan to tweak this load a bit and move to 200 yards and test again. So far I like what I see. I have plans to test the PB bullet also, but at a lower velocity.308 4 10 17.jpg 308 4 10 17.jpg

Ben, Thanks for the complement. The pics of your cast bullets is super. Have you tested the speeds on your load?

She's a winner for sure, GC'ed or PB...I got the same mold but in 314 with a 304 nose..
I believe you have all seen these but they are worth a second glance...
They actually surprised me cause I didn't think the .304 nose would work that well..but obviously it does..

John got me too thinking about trying slower powders with the Plain Base bullets ...I just started tinkering with them Monday and today..
interesting results..

Monday I tried 16.5 and 17 grains of RX7 with the 315PB..the 16.5 load produced a nice round 1 1/4" group, the 17 threw them a little wild.

Today I tried 15, 15.5 and 16 grains of RX7 the results were interesting

One of the things I noticed Monday was that the groups weren't anywhere near as far South as I expected..I was obviously pushing them way too fast..

Today they were where I expected them...the upper orange dot was the aim point for the 15 gr load, the upper green dot was the aim point for the 15.5 gr. load, the lower right pink dot was for the 16 gr load..

The PB shoot a couple plus inches lower and to the left than CU gas checked...

I am going to try the 15.5 load again..I am just not good enough with a scope to get nice clean groups... I know the "fliers" were me..

If I can repeat the results I'll try 2400 next then Johns' favorite.... SR4759..

From what I have been told SR-4759 was discontinued before and than brought back. Maybe we will be lucky enough to have this happen again. My plan is to buy all that I find for now and enjoy it's use.

As best I know this is the third time it's been discontinued. Don't think I'll hold my breath on seeing it again though. With all the eggs in one basket (Hodgdon) I think the product line has been streamlined, permanently.

Well . . . How much does an irreplaceable item go for these days? What would I do for the other 8 pounds? 12 pounds would feel lonely. The drive to come get it would really add to the cost. (I don't deliver) Does this powder work with rubber bullets or whatever they make you use out there these days? Is this product legal in Commiefornia? Would I need a letter of approval from Governor Moonbeam? How much sellers tax would Moonbeam want? Would I end up on Moonbeams list of hazmat sellers?

I think John has an 8 pounder he may be willing to part with. I've considered buying it so that I would only have 28 pounds.
