Ive found out that you cant get enough 4198 in a starline case, and a 200 gr bullet,to get in trouble.
My highest load today,,i used 12 inch drop tube,,vibrate,,and leave the shell in the seater die for a minute or so.
2170 fps,with a es of 7!!!
And 1 inch group@50.
This load is easily 110% compressed.

Yup I have found a few bullets shoot really well @ this number.

NOE 183g & mp220g both are great @ about 14/1500

Shot h322 and vv133 today,in the legend.
Max loads of 322,will approach 1800
Max loads of v133,will only reach 1580,but...you talk about extremely small groups, wow!
I guess i have to hunt down some of that 1680 next,

David Bradshaw, over on Singleactions, a silhouette-shooter and tester of the Ruger 357 Max revolver prototypes has said something to the effect that a case full of 4198 would yield "low" velocities, but extraordinary results on target. The key, as he described "requires the follow-through of a dead-man."

I'm not sure my skills are up to the level of me being able to extend or improve my follow-through on the trigger to make a difference between powders, but the idea of slower powders in the 'Max having a positive influence on accuracy is not lost on me.

I have to get back to mine. I've been fussing over "which barrel" to buy for the SSK50, when I've had a new 357 Max carbine barrel sitting in the safe for several years. DUH!

So, I'm enjoying this timely thread.

Never had a max,but i sure do love the 1894marlin,in 357mag.

I bought this ruger ar legend, thinking i could have an autoloader that shoots 150ish plain base,@1500fps,it will do this nicely!so ive ended up with a automatic 357!!
But,when i put the rcbs 200gc in it,,it becomes a hole puncher, anywheres around 1800fps,and then again, around 2100.it shoots these 200,s so well, that i havent been back to the pistol bullets all summer.
Some day,i have to scope this thing, and see what it will really do,as all i have been shooting,is a reddot@50 yards.aint no doubt in my mind, that it will shoot under an inch at 100.
Slow burning powders, generally give me my most accurate loads.

LOL! Sorry. When I see "350 Legend," I think 357 Max in terms of case capacity, bullet diameter, velocities, etc. The new 350L is pretty much a 357 Max that you can use in an AR or bolt-action, so I tend to forget about differentiating.

4198 is a slow powder for the 'Max, so it would be a slow powder for the 350L - and I mean SLOW compared to the powders usually associated with what is recommended in manuals for top velocities, so it's a little unconventional for that size case/bullet.

Only thing is top 357 Max loads are starting loads for the 9x45... (what I call the "Legend") :)

Yeah, I know. Oldest trick in the book - jack the pressure on something newer/better to make it look like they're not lyin'.;)

Still about the same case capacities and only so much that so much slow powder can do.

Just for grins ......
If you grab your 48th plus edition of the Lyman manual and look at the Winchester 405 SP for the 458 WM then flip over to the 45-110&120 you'll find the only difference is 10,000 psi and 10" of barrel between the 458 start loads and Trapdoor max loads .

Actually it's like that all over the 308 clan couldn't touch the x57s (etc) if they had the same neck , shoulder , and 58kpsi limits . Blow the shoulder out and shorten the necks 1/3 on the 06 clan nominal and the 2.5" case belted mag is only wearing a belt to keep its pants up . The one in the 06' case is a 30 or 300 Gibbs .

It's all good. My ol' man used to say the same thing about the 243 being "better" than the 'Roberts - "they cheated by bumping the pressure!"

Truth is, had I not comitted to slimming down my battery, I'd have rebarreled a CZ527 to 350L. I still poke fun of the 223, fine cartridge that it is, for being a just 222 someone stretched a tad and boosted the pressure on to make "better."

Just because a cartridge is quite marginally better doesn't make it a bad cartridge. Being compared to the quite marginally inferior predecessor is not an insult. My best 223 load (for decades now) can be easily achieved with the 222 case at 222 pressures.
