Was loading some pheasant shells today, kinda been in a shotgun mood.

I was going through a box of AA hulls I bought when I found this one.

it appears someone knocked just the cup out of the primer with a 3/16” (?) paddle bit before it broke. Wonder why?

Why someone would do that or use such a tool is over my paygrade. Guess they're just smarter than me.

That's where I'm at Rick. Always wonder what someone was thinking when I see a tool abused! They had to first drill through the flash hole to knock the cup out???? That hull is going in the WTF drawer. LOL

I wonder if they were trying to see if a large pistol/rifle primer would fit.

Someone was converting the hulls into decorative globes for Christmas string lights when they broke a bit. Seriously.

I can remember drilling out 20 ga. WWAA's to make poor man action cleaning rod guides.
Never used a spade bit. :headscratch:

the piece he drilled was the cup, they would have had to have gone through it then took the anvil out.
then drilled the flash hole.
I'm assuming they went in and hit the anvil, wedged the bit to the side some, and snap.

back in the older olden days you could buy little kits for shot shells to reload the primer as well as the case.

Something like this works:

CW,
You are correct. That piece is the anvil of this style primer. I just tore one apart to confirm that. Evidently, the cup blew out of the primer while also moving anvil to rear. Looked like the tip of a spade bit to me. Once fired AA hulls.

I too thought it was a spade bit. I tried blowing up the picture but it was too blurry & didn't work out.

no something like that don't work, he didn't re-fill the primer.

I used to make them for a local store here. Best way to do it is leave the primer in. Then run the shell into the crimp starter then in the final crimp. Then all you have to do is slide the light bulb right into the crimped end. One of my side jobs to make more $$$$ for reloading supplies.

yep.
notice the hand movements are super similar to a Dillon 550.
once you get the fluid motions down it becomes such second nature you fumble around trying to use anything else.

I actually modified my 650 with a case feeder, so I have to manually advance the primer wheel, otherwise my right hand starts wavering around in mid air looking for somewhere to go.
