American Select

I finally got hold of a pound of this, nowhere to be found near me, but my brother in N.C. got some to me while I was visiting this past weekend.

I know Ben really likes tgis powder, and I will be going back through threads for info, but what is the general rule for start data? I have the old Lyman boks which give data for Unique, 700X, Red Dot, etc. Is there a general formula for figuring data for similar powders?

I do a lot of cast low node shooting in .30 caliber rifles, anxious ti give this a try.

That's pretty much what I was after. The Lyman book has quite a bit of data for Green Dot, so should be able to go from there.

Ben, I'll be reading through your posts and JW's too. I'll sure be interested to see how this stacks up against Unique.

it's right between red and green dot.
i'd start with red-dot data to be safe, and the data will be about 200 times easier to find.

just a side note.
it definitely is not the same as green-dot in a shot shell application.

As we all know, using a propellant in an application where data is limited or doesn't exist " assuming " that it is similar to XYZ powder is risky at best.

Be very careful.

No plans for it in shot shells. I have enough 700X to last quite a while.

I'm not really a stranger to figuring out data fir stuff like this. I used up about five pounds of Alcan 120 a few years ago innmosrltly cast bullet rifle loads. It was close enough to Red Dot that I never had a priblem using starting data fir it. Wish I could get some more of it.

the data on the Alcan box of wads was exactly the same as for the red-dot loads listed below it.
the not so efficient wads from back then allowed a lot of cross over, and even different hulls didn't make a lot of difference because of that inefficient gas sealing.

The only data I could come up with for it was a couple of pistol calibers had some in the old Lyman book, but it married up with Red Dot quite well. I should have looked around for more data, but that seemed like enough to try with cast in a big, strong, Mauser bolt rifle in .30-06 I have and when it worked just like Red Dot would have, so that was my go ahead, but I'm careful with such things and I tend to load on the mild side.

I went in the new Scheel's in Wichita today and they had lots of primers and quite a bit of powder, but ZERO Alliant powders, pretty much the norm around here. My brother said he could get American Select any time he wanted in N.C. STrange these regional differences.

they are weird.
CCI's are made a hundred or so miles away from here, but i've always seen stacks and pallets of winchesters, with just a smattering of CCI's kicking around.
i'd like to lay in a couple of sleeves of their 300's.
