IMG_1172.JPG I had loaded some of these 230gr NOE bullets Brad sent me with 4gr of Red Dot and they shot just fine. Grouped pretty good too. The base of the 312290 looks to be the same as the NOE. Will a gas check make a lot of difference in pressure?

Here is a chart showing Red dot with the "new" OAL. It shows charges from 20% under to 10% over 4 gr.

Cartridge : .300 AAC Blackout (SAAMI)
Bullet : .308, 210, LYM LRN GC 311290
Useable Case Capaci: 14.184 grain H2O = 0.921 cm³
Cartridge O.A.L. L6: 1.994 inch = 50.65 mm
Barrel Length : 18.0 inch = 457.2 mm
Powder : Alliant RED DOT

Predicted data by increasing and decreasing the given charge,
incremented in steps of 2.0% of nominal charge.

Okay. Thank you. Now I need someone to put this in layman terms for me. Lol!
Is this a safe load or not?
Off the top of my head I don't know what the max PSI is for the 300.

SAAMI max average pressure is 55 K PSI.

From the chart even 4.4 gr of Red Dot is estimated to give 38 K PSI. Well under the SAAMI max so yes, 4 gr is easily safe.

Safe, yes. But 850 fps will be about like throwing a rock. I'd try Unique or Universal. 5.0 grains of Unique with the Lyman bullet at 1.995" COAL gets you about 1050 fps at about 30K psi, which is a good balance, although at the cost of about 300 psi more muzzle pressure. It's going to be loud without a can regardless, just "less loud" than a hot supersonic load.

But what better for killing rocks than rocks?

I do think Unique might be a better choice but if you have lots of Red Dot.......

I have About 9 1/2 pounds of Red Dot. But I have 8lbs of Unique and 12 or 13 of Universal too.
Might Universal be a good choice as well being it's VERY close to Unique burn rate wise? Maybe a bit cleaner burn?

it would be worth a go.

I went with the faster powder just because I mostly plop rounds in at 50 yds.
I'm actually down to 3.5grs of 700-x and tumble lube.
you can hear the LEE boolit hit the wood down there and it's accurate.
I know it is right on the edge because a sp primer will slow it down too much and I start losing stability and groups enlarge.
4grs of quick powder will get you to 100yds with stability.
unique at 5 or universal at 5.2-3 or so should do the same but with a bit more noise.

I move up from there to the gas checked rcbs 165gr silh boolit or the ACE-140 on top of 9.5grs of AA#9, and from there to the 110gr Varmageddon or V-max on top of 17.5grs. AA-4100
it's just a few clicks on the scope.
I need one more load to round my rifle out and that's something like a 130gr deer load.
and the 311359 for the wife's rifle needs a finalized load too.
