Thumbs? So that's where I got it all wrong. All these years I was under the false impression that thumbs were for grasping and now I find out they are for . . . talking.

Yep. Held properly the thumbs do the talking.
Fingers are behind the iPad holding it up as it is squeezed light between palms. Thumbs are to the front and do the typing.
