At the casting bench in the sky. RIP Bret.
if i had a choice in 25 cal it would either the 25-20 or 25-35. i like my cartridges old ;);)!!!!

25-35 would be my choice. That is a vastly under appreciated cartridge.

I’ve always felt the T/C Contender was grossly under-appreciated. It is perhaps one of the most pragmatic “modern” firearms for someone that wants a solid performing single shot rifle (or pistol). Its closest competitor is probably the H&R receivers for break open shotguns/rifles and the Contender is far more refined than that approach.

If you could somehow take a Martini-Henry or Remington rolling block or Ruger #1 action and combine it with a easily swapped barrel, you would have something almost as versatile as a T/C Contender but the Contender would still be a simpler design. It really is an understated, often overlooked tool.

I’ve always felt the T/C Contender was grossly under-appreciated......

Times and attitudes changes, I guess. Used to be people were more serious about actually hitting their target than making noise, but even in its heyday, I think there were relatively few who appreciated it as much as it deserved. Shortly after it came out, I discovered it in some magazine or another and thought it was a neat idea, even if it did look a little futuristic. Ran the idea by the o'l man and, while he usually took the stance that anything - ANYTHING - was either pure crap or pure gold, he was lukewarm to it. I specifically remember that. My idea at the time was that it'd surely make a neat little rifle, but I got dirty looks and at least one scolding for even thinking about making one into a rifle, lest I end up in jail. This was long before TC actually did that and fought that fight.

I personally never appreciated it as a handgun. I figured I could carry five or six rounds of handgun ammo in a proper handgun, so why not carry a proper handgun AND a rifle/carbine? I shot the Contender in 41 Mag and 30 Herrett when I was younger and just did not care for it - especially in the 41 Mag, which seemed much less abusive in a revolver to me.

It really is an understated, often overlooked tool.

I've had or used all manner of guns and have been especially fond of Mauser bolt-actions, some lever-actions, a few different single-shots. As things changed in my life, I adjusted my perspective regarding need v. want and the result of a long process was that the Contender (carbine) was what I needed. Actually, not just one because I'd rather grab a whole rifle than stop and switch barrels. If something ever goes wrong with one, I can swap frames/barrels to keep the chambering I need in action. Couldn't do that with my other stuff.

Some would believe that the limitations of the action strength would pose a problem, but there are no polar bears, moose, cape buffalo here, so I'm covered with room to spare. Back to needs v. wants again, but I'm lucky that most of my actual wants center on the tamer stuff anyway.

As a utility piece - a "tool," I couldn't come up with anything better* as a "homestead gun", except that Handi Rifles would do fine too. Just couldn't get the barrels I wanted in a Handi-Rifle and several companies supply new ones for Contenders, as well as small spare parts still, so...

*Note that where one lives/hunts/defends themselves will have a profound impact on this assertion.

After a slight foible with the FFL sending a copy to Marty, I got an e-mail saying mine shipped today.

That means anyone behind me on the list just moved up a notch!:)

Looked at stock sets online today. HOLY COW!! I really should have bought an extra set when I ordered the SSK-50. Rynite fore-ends were $26, now they're $50. That was only a little over four years ago.

Well, I'm off the hook for buying a new barrel.

Don't know what I was thinking, but I've had a new, unmounted/unfired, 20" MGM 357 Max barrel sitting in my safe for five years or so. Scope base, rings and scope are all new too.

I just need a stock set.

Look what I got today!

Stock set is due tomorrow, but I don't get out until late. Scope is still in the safe, so I need to mount that too, but I don't have to go looking for one.

My new (five or so years ago) 20" MGM 357 Max barrel fit perfectly.... but wouldn't open. Popped out the trigger-guard pin and the barrel picot pin, wiggled it out and took a few swipes across the tops of the bolts, after removing them from the barrel. Hit the sides too. Reassembled, fit the barrel to the action and it closes/opens as it should. Slightly balky, but they smooth out after opening/closing several times without more disassembly.

I am very impressed with the workmanship and the inside of the action was clean as a pin. Trigger is typical of an unmolested Contender trigger, which means better than most, but should be first-rate after a very brief touch-up/adjusting session. I think the surfaces of the parts look cleaner and more precise than the parts inside the originals. Very nice.

Not crazy about the extended ear-tufts on the cat, now that I see it in person. Was hoping I'd like that better once I had it in hand, but it's not a deal-breaker. I'm just not a fan of ANY kind of decoration on guns. I guess I'm not a fan of pure decoration on anything, really, but I believe I'm probably outnumbered by a wide, wide margin on that point.
