I hope that J.H. Barlow would be proud........

Good looking bullet Ben. I hope the dimple point works well for you. I've been shooting the NOE dimple points this winter and comparing them to HP and FP bullets from the same moulds. Six rifles, one Ruger 77/44 and the rest Marlin lever guns, in calibers .30-30, .32-20, .357, and .44 mag. Every one of them shot the dimple points better, some way better than either HP or FP, all but the .32-20 are Ranchdog moulds. Anybody else seing this in their lever guns?

My first mold was/is a 311284, and a number of years back I had Buckshot HP it for me. A wonderful bullet. A few years ago Brad picked up a factory 311291 HP, and it shoots very well, better that the unhallowed one.

The 311291 was one of Dr. Hudson & J.H. Barlow's mould designs going back to 1906. It continues today to be a fine cast bullet for a wide variety of .30 cal. rifles.

Today , I decided to cast with the cup point HP pin.

I wasn't aware that Dr. Hudson had anythign to do with it. I was under the impression that John Barlow was the designer of the 308291 which turned into the 311291.

THAT looks like the "one" mould I need to find for my portable kit.

One mould to do everything for one cartridge, and the bullet looks to be good all-'round in itself, even before the various options afforded by pins.

Fortuitous that someone of such high casting-character is putting it through its paces.

Very grateful that you share, Ben. Thank you.

I tried the Lyman 311291 in my Winchester 94, and it wouldn't chamber without jamming into the rifling. My rifle has a short throat though. I am considering having my throat opened up so I can use that bullet as well as the RCBS 30-180-FN, which would chamber, but with difficulty. The problem is, with the Lyman 31141 I get good accuracy, and I hate to mess with the gun and possibly lose that. I'm getting 1.5" groups at 70 yards right now, with full power loads. I get even better if I dial it back a bit.

Why do you want to make yourself a problem? Be content with what you have and go shooting.
I have been, I just wish I could use those two bullets. As of right now, I don't have any other bullets for the 30-30 other than 31141. And I'm satisfied... but, I enjoy trying new to me bullets.

I would love to try HP bullets in my rifles for long range work. HP jacketed bullets are the norm in precision rifle shooting because it moves the CG back a bit. I think this could help with CB accuracy. Alas, I'm not wired to monkey with pins during the casting process. I want to cast fast and have a huge pile of bullets in short order. If I were to try to make a few HP and found the accuracy vastly improved, I would be dooming myself to a fate I'm not sure I could deal with. :embarrassed:

Rob,
The Cramer system of making hollow points is very straight forward and almost as quick as casting solids. I cast a Cramer made 140gr. .360 diameter, hollow point for our .38 specials, and it's one of my favorite moulds. It's a two cavity, and is dropping keepers after only a few (3 or 4) casts.
MP moulds uses the same system for his hollow point moulds. I've only had one of his moulds, and I evidently got the only lemon. I sold it after much frustration, but I continue to hear great reviews from everyone else.
I'm pretty sure that if you wanted to try the bullets from one of the moulds that a member here has, most all would be willing to cast some up for you.
I know I would, if there is anything on my shelves that you want to try.

I don't doubt for a second that most here would be willing to send me some HP bullets to try. And I truly appreciate your offer. I will research the Cramer System. More knowledge never hurts.

Cramer system is elegance in simplicity. But, requires accuracy in making it. Tempting. But probably not.

With MP molds hollow points can be cast just as fast as solid points. They are things if beauty and wonder and are fairly priced for the quality you get.

It was the first mould I cast with in the old “ammunition maker set”. Will still cutvitcaftercall these years. Used in an olrcRrmonhton Springfield. Great on the .30/30 if the nose is small enough to chamber./beagle
