The weather being what it was..I thought it was a good time to follow through with some thing I have been meaning to do for some time...replace the Ideal single cavity 454190 mold I lent my nephew (yes I know you don't "lend" stuff to nephews..you give stuff to nephews..that's how I became a $1,000.00 club member at NOE)...so anyways...browsing through E-Bay I came across a newer dbl cavity 454190 ..new according to the seller...I am old enough to know better but as I said I was bored...

I bought it with "buy It Now"..sent off the payment and waited..

Got off to a good start..then BANG..an e-mail from the seller.."sorry sent you the wrong item...but if you can ise it it's yours"

OK..wonder what it is..questioned answered ..it arrived the next day..a Lee push thorough sizer in .452 h-u-m-m-m ...wonder if that will actually be .452...?

Good now I have two questionable items...:):):).. could be Dan will be unbored for awhile..

Two more days pass and the mold arrives..Interesting NO ONE ever thinks to put at least a rubber band around the molds to keep the two halves from banging against each other in shipment..

Careful inspection shows no damge from the alignment pins..guess the bullet was dodged there..

Put the two haves together to check alignment..as expacted Lyman quality control was absent that day..
plenty of slop back and forth...so I searched for my nail set and pushed the pins out just a hair.. slop gone..

Halves mate fairly well..blocks close tightly..on to casting

It cast beautify from the get go..no prep except for some sprue plate lube..

After casting size and lube...the Lee push trough was indeed .452

I waited for a good day and we got it last week..in the 60's ..boy was it nice ..so off I went armed with the M1 Garand and the RBH in 45 Colt...

The Garand performed magnificently ..the Ruger turned out to be a one shot wonder..yup.. the only worthy target I could find was a have empty cup of cold coffee so I placed it on the 50 yd burm...went back to the bench ...loaded 5 rounds..cocked the gun.. took aim and fired...that round exploded the coffee cup..no more target..the guy next to me said "now what?".. my reply .."stones ,clumps of dirt, little sticks and any other target of opportunity"..( I wasn't about ready to go to the club house and drink a soda to get the can)..nope I just rearranged the burm with those fine old bullets..I believe it's called "plinking"...and boy what fun it was.!!

At least the block halves seem to line up. Somewhere around 2007 the boring vises were getting so worn out that the blocks would torque away from each other, resulting in an elliptical bullet. Several years after that the operators stopped clearing chips from between the blocks and we started seeing cavities not cut to full depth, and on 2c one cavity cut deeper than the one next to it. Looks like you turned out ok on this one, and free sizer to go along with it. I make a habit of asking a shipper directly to ensure the mould halves are either firmly fixed together or completely separated for shipment, even if it is someone I know should know.

Ian..I uaually do as well..forgot this time..
The mold has potential ..it is still slightly off aligment..I think I can fix that by making one of the pins the "king pin" ..we shall see..
I still have to try the Lee 255 I bought several months ago..it should shoot fine..I just like the older style bullets and have no need for a crimp grouve as I only shoot them out of the BH..

Going to try and get the photos where I want them

Dimpled primers, my Lee Classic Cast Turret press dimpled the primers in pretty much that very manner only slightly more so. I finally filed the face of the primer seating stem as flat as I could and the dimpling is much less. FWIW it didn't seem to cause an primer dysfunction, it just bothered me.

I Just learned something new. Had to go "edumacate" myself with regard to 45 Colt bore and bullet sizes. Seeing that you were sizing a 45 Colt bullet down to .452 had me scratching my head. I've never loaded for a revolver chambered for 45 Colt that was manufactured in the latter half of the 20th century. Also, I've never bought bullets for loading 45 Colt. Didn't know they had gone from .454 to .452.

Like your 7-1/2" Blackhawk. Always had a bit of a hankering for a 7-1/2" Colt SAA because that's what Paladin carried.

Ive got a Ruger Bisley with .455 throats. Born around 1985 ish. Most of the new Rugers go much tighter. Easy to open up but it's hell to put back.

I've owned too many early Ruger BH's ..as a matter of fact at one point I had one of everyone they made...

I also owned more than a few Colts..the Rugers were and are better than the Colts..BUT I never had one that far off...interesting

I still smile today over my child like behavior when I purchased a brand new 4 5/8" Ruger Vaquero in stainless steel....now there's a sight picture NOT to behold..
but hey it looked cool and felt great loaded in your hand...

Well, on the SS Vaqueros you have to line up the glint with the sparkle and kinda tilt it so most of the glare is off to one side, then aim a little to the outside to make your hit. Or paint the whole top flat black. You have to admit they go in and out of a holster well, though.

That they do Ian..they also work in an indoor range..but then they don't glitter all over...

Back in I think it was 1968 ..I had a Colt SSA ..US marked , 7.5" barrel....nickeled with stag grips..I thought that was the coolest thing ever..until some one saw it sitting on the car seat and asked why I had bought one of the Matty Matel guns...never looked at it the same way again..

True, stainless Vaqueros and stag stocks need a Roy Rogers conchoed quick-draw rig, and a shirt with lots of piping on the seams and maybe some tassels here and there to look right. And a few rolls of caps....
