Is this the "new normal" in primer pricing?

I was just in tonight to our local Sportsman's Warehouse and noticed that all the prices for CCI & Federal primers had dropped drastically. Example: Federal 210's $23.97 down from $35.97 2 days ago. All of the Federal & CCI primers were down the same $12 per thousand. CCI 209's 19.97. The 100 packs were down by the same ratio. These are not overstock "red tag" prices. They are priced with their normal white tags with nothing indicating a sale. In fact they had some, but were not overstocked by any means. Winchester and Remington carried their normal prices. Now Federal and CCI share the same ownership so this would explain this change at the same time. I'm thinking that since the component scare is off, stuff isn't selling. Remember these are close to the same prices that we saw before the days when we couldn't get anything. Some select powders have been slashed (IMR3031) from 229.00 down to 149.00 for example. But these powder prices are for select overstock items that aren't moving and are "Red Tagged" as temporary sale prices. What do you all think? Do you think that people being "stocked up" is hurting sales enough to put pressure on pricing?

Seems on shotgun components that once shot went crazy people went to buying factory ammo instead of reloading. I've purchased a bunch of components at garage sales the last couple years, and that was the reason I heard for getting out of shotgun reloading. Seems .22 ammo is dropping also.

I read somewhere about lead free primers. coming onto the market.
I stocked up right before the last shortage and will probably never have to buy another primer again.
Maybe they are trying to sell off their inventory before the new stuff comes in.

Sept. 10, 2021 Steve left us. You are missed.
Yes, I would say they need to sell existing stock before a lower price is seen, I know in my town that will be the case.

Depends around here. Bass Pro and Cabelas are still higher than a kite. Scheels and Guns Unlimited are backdown to reasonable prices on most primers and powder.
Nowhere near pre scare prices but reasonable.

MikeN,
I bought the last of the standard Federal primers at our Sportsman Warehouse. They were priced at the $23.97 but were indeed "Red Tagged." There were several other reloading component "Red Tag" items; bullets and powder. Don't know why. ???

I haven't noticed any drop, but the only shop I was in lately was Cabela's so that doesn't surprise me. It would be welcome news if it becomes widespread.

My LGS, as well as Cabelas are still priced high. I haven't checked anywhere else.
But, I am in the same place as Hawk, I doubt I'll never need to buy another primer.
Not only did I stock up on fresh primers before they went crazy, I've been buying/swapping for vintage gunshow primers.
I swapped collectable coins (indian head collection) for several 1k bricks of Alcan and other brands of by-gone eras.
Another sweet deal was at a gunshow, a guy I knew, was selling off an estate buyout. He had a shoebox, that got jostled in the trip to the show, it was full of half empty 100 ct Primer containers and a whole bunch of loose primers...of every flavor, as well as a bunch of loose GC's of 4 flavors, as well as 2 flavors of percussion caps, I believe I paid $5. After spending 8 hours sorting, on a cold winter day, I had over 3000 Primers all sorted and boxed, as well as about 4 thousand GCs and 1500 percussion caps sorted.

OP mentions CCI and Federal. I was warned a few years back not to load those brands in a semi-automatic, as the soft primers can slam-fire if the pistol/carbine is not perfectly cleaned. The story I got was a range shooter whose car and guns were confiscated on class 3 violations due to accidental slam-fires. Ceaper to surrender than fight, I guess.
My last 5K case primer purchase was Tula primers, which a gunsmith told me are so hard they cause misfires. I think it's the timing on my revolver. Would soft cup/slam-fire isssues scare customers away enough to drive down prices?

some of the sportsmans don't have them marked down in the store and you have to show them their website to get it.

all I really need is shot shell primers.
they have been running higher for quite some time now and my local sportsman's has like maybe 2-3 bricks of them at any given time so not really worth the 150 mile round trip to bother.
I know federal is gonna change out to a new ''greener'' style shot shell primer so I have been getting a brick here and there when I can, I'd still like to have 40-50K more though.

I'd have grabbed that 4064 at 149$ pretty quick, I could use another 8 lbs. heck any rifle powder out the door at 20$ a lb. I can use.

what is odd is usually this is the time of year they have a 3-5% increase in price.

I just paid $29 a brick at the local gun show for Winchester small pistol primers and I thought I was getting a decent deal.
