Little Cutie Lyman 313492

Rally

NC Minnesota
My Lgs bought out an estate, which had 76 moulds in the deal. I got first look, and came home with four new moulds. One of them was a Lyman 313492 2 cavity. Couldn't find much info on the mould, but in my search found links to Glens wadcutter article and a post Ben jumped on. Great article by the way Glen. I learned today, this is a class 3 mould designed for field use and revolvers. Perfect for what I intend to use it for, shooting live snared beaver.
The wife, my youngest daughter and grand daughter went on a road trip yesterday, to see my oldest daughter in KC, and then my mother-in-law in Il. It was a nice day today, so I opened the shop door up and got to cast a few of this bullet today, while watching a pair of Wood ducks play in a piece of spring flooded timber outside my shop. Those ducks about drove my dogs crazy, which are kenneled about 50' from the ducks. The dogs got their revenge when I ran them at 5 PM.
Filled the pot with a 50/50 COWW-SOWW plus 3% SN alloy and cast 14 lbs of bullets. What a neat little mould. It was new when I got it. Cleaned it up with hot water and dish soap, preheated the mould on a hot plate while the pot got up to temp. Threw the first 25 bullets back in the pot, lubed the pivot screw and pins, and made some nice bullets. The nose on this bullet is .310 and the base is .313, weighs 87 grains with my alloy. I'm going to be loading it in .32 S&W long brass, with 1.5- 2 grains of BE to start with. I'm thinking around 700 Fps wont exit a head shot beaver, but still be way more authority than a .22 Lr. Wife left me a crock pot full of cabbage, carrots and ham. Good day!

Rally :

Ammo for my little 32 S&W break open is $25 a box + tax.
If I'm going to shoot it very much there was a necessity to reload.

I also have the 313492 , 84 gr. Wadcutter . I size to .312" with 1.3 grs. of B'Eye ( manual suggest starting at 1.1 and max at 1.5, .........so I chose 1.3 grs. )

I've already tested some and they shoot great !

If you dislike heavy recoil and loud muzzle blast, this
one is YOUR FRIEND !

Oh, did I say a 1 pound can of B'Eye will last for 3 forevers.
I'm with you........... way more authority than a .22 Lr.

At the casting bench in the sky. RIP Bret.
IIRC I have the same mould in a 2 cav. Haven't used it much, but the 32 S+W and Long are simply great field guns. More than a 22/22mag but less than a 357 or hotter 38. I've shot a lot of fur bearers with the 32 S+W in a Rem#4 Rolling Block. Works very nicely on up to coyote sized stuff.

A very versatile bullet.
I shoot the 313492 in my T/C Contender , 30-30.
Sometimes , I lube only the bottom ring.
Other times, I size and roll in liquid lube.
Using either method , the little bullet is a " nail driver " out of my T/C Pistol in 32 H & R Mag loaded to about 750 fps or shot out of the T/C Contender , 10" 30-30 barrel.

Ben,
What does your mould drop at? Mine is .310 at the nose and .313 at the base. I read in another post that the NOE group buy was sized .303 at the nose and up to .315 on the base. My Ruger single six likes .312 so may not be the best bullet for me yet. I'm trying to buy a S&W 31 or 631, but folks are pretty proud of them.(or I'm too cheap)
I also got a Lyman 311359 4 cav. Gc. mould and a Lyman 311316 4 cav. Gc. mould in this deal Doesn't appear the 311316 has every been used. I'm thinking of using these in my newly acquired Savage 325B in .30-30. Both are listed around 115 grs so hoping to get a plinker round out of at least one of them. I'm refinishing the stock on the 325B now, it been redone before and neither were great jobs. LOL Tried stripping the stock four times and the finish that was on it is some kind of tough. Dark spots on the pistol grip that just wouldn't strip out. The rifle came off the Red Lake reservation and has seem some hard times. I'm guessing it was redone last time with some industrial finish from the local paper mill. I stained it twice with a dark walnut stain and using tongue oil to seal it. Won't be pretty but it will shed water. The former owner had tried to glass bed the recoil lug by just adding fiberglass and screwing it down tight in the stock. The barrel actually rocked in the stock when I pulled it apart. The forward barrel band was pulling the barrel down into the front of the stock when tightened. It still shot straight (not sure how) but I removed the old glass and will see if I can get it done any better. If they could only talk!

My 313492 mikes .302 " on the nose and .312" on the bands.
A bit small for a lot of the older .32 revolvers.
However, It is about perfect for use in modern .30 cal. barrels.
You can see in the above photo what it does out of a 10" T/C Contender , 30-30 barrel.

I have the 311359 and it's pretty versatile in the 30's mine makes 311 easily and would make 312 with a minimal amount of coaxing.

I like the looks of that 316.

I'm firing up the pots and warming that 311359 up now. Wife is gone and walleye opener tomorrow. I can cast all night if I want to. Suppose to rain in the morning, clearing by afternoon. My Dad stopped by today and is chomping at the bit. Battery charger on the boat now, preseason prep done today.
Fiver,
I like the looks of that 316 also. Looks like it should make a 1200 fps vermin bullet in my .30-30. Only paid $80.00 for four moulds so not out a lot if they don't pan out. The mould has been used before but not much. I knocked the burs off and lubed it a little. Hope to get some lead flowing through it this next week. SD called again today and it looks like we may have a deal, so I might be gone a couple weeks. Need about 4 more hours in a day.

our walleye is open now, but the weather keeps on changing.
I had the A/C on in the truck coming home from the Lake the other day,,, and I'm thinking about turning the Furnace back on in the house right now, it never got even close to 50 today.
the Bass have been moving in and out wanting to spawn but the water temp keeps fluctuating and they keep dumping and filling the reservoirs about 3-4' every other day.
Littlegirl caught a super nice [26-27"] Walleye out on the mudflats along the edge of a weedline right next to a little drop-off.
she asked why I had stopped there to fish about 2 casts earlier, instead of moving over to the corner by the fallen tree's where we normally start Bass fishing in the early afternoon.

That should be enough to find out if it will shoot. Drops at .313 from 93.5-3.13-3.09 (17 lb COWW and .5 pewter). One cavity hangs on a little longer than I like.
Not sure what the fish are doing here. It for sure is a cold opener, and tonight is cold. My feet started getting cold casting! Guys trapping spring beaver were seeing Northerns spawning. Suckers are running now and lots of folks fishing them, which is about two weeks later than normal. I've still got snowbanks on the edge of the driveway and was raking leaves today that still had ice under them. Had the wood stove going last night to keep the house warm in this wet weather. Forecast is for rain part of tomorrow clearing by afternoon. My Dad is 84 so his days of fishing in the rain are over. I'd catch hell for getting him wet. LOL

The 316 has been absolutely superb in every platform I've tried it in that will shoot cast at all. From 32 S+W to 308, it simply works. Load at 1K and you have an overgrown 22LR/Mag. Up it to 1400 and you have a primo small game round. Up it another 3-600 fps and you have a coyote killer out to the limits of your range estimating. I've taken up to 22-2300 in the 308. Shot fine, couldn't think of a real use for it and it was getting louder and using more powder. Most of my stuff with the 316 is in the 1-1.4K area. 1400 is way to much of a good thing with the flat nose on grey squirrel. That's why I bought a 359. I just can't seem time to find a load my Savage 23B likes for that bullet. Should do a lot less damage than the 316.

A 4 cav 311316, brand new! Drool...
