EDIT: SOLD, 8/27/23:)

EDIT: REDUCED, 8/8/23 One-Time Offer to Forum-Members before it goes to a show with someone.

How about $450, plus insured shipping for the whole setup?

Right now, it'll cost that for a Traditions "Hawken," which isn't bad, but these are much nicer guns.
If anyone is apprehensive about buying a used muzzle-loader - wondering what's at the other end of that long hole at the muzzle - this gun has been meticulously cleaned every time it was used and there is no rusty-crusty stuff hiding at the breech. Traditional muzzle-loaders are sort of becoming a niche thing and getting hard to find and very expensive.

END OF EDIT:

Lyman, Great Plains Rifle, Percussion, 50 Cal.

1:66” twist (patched round-ball-compatible)

32” barrel, 15/16” across the flats

“European Walnut” stock

Iron furniture

Browned, not blued

Solid brass, 3/8”, extra-length ram-rod, plus original “hardwood” ramrod

Favored load: .495” ball, .015” patch, 90 grains Pyrodex RS, chronographed at just under 2kfps

I bought this rifle new, as a kit, because I wanted it brown – not blue. There is a fair bit more work in this than sanding and assembly. Stock lines were not well defined and some were just way off. Trigger guard, butt plate, etc. came as-cast. I case-hardened the butt-plate, toe-plate, tang and trigger guard using bone meal and leather scraps and a hardwood fire. Lock required minor tuning. I don’t remember the regimen I followed for the wood finish, but it was rigorius and has held up well. From the factory, the thimbles are soldered to the rib, which is soldered to the barrel – no screws, very robust. Patent breech with clean-out screw and appropriately-sized jag for the reduced diameter at the breech. This rifle was properly and thoroughly cleaned immediately after each use. Rear sight is adjustable. I’ve shot two deer with this rifle, at 112 and 125 yards, round ball, iron sights. No time for such fun these days, so I’m setting it free.

I got a lot of pleasure using this rifle. It is accurate and very satisfying to shoot. Right now, all I can do is LOOK at it.

ACCESSORIES:
  • Leather pouch
  • Original wooden ramrod
  • Spare “plastic” ramrod, mostly for cleaning
  • 250+ Speer .495” pure lead balls
  • A bunch of pre-oiled (Ox-Yoke Wonder LUBE) .015” patches
  • Straight capper, brass
  • Ball-Starter, brass/wood/leather
  • Adjustable Powder Measure (heavy-duty)
  • Ball-Screw
  • Bore Jag
  • Patent Breech Jag
  • Unfinished powder horn with spring-loaded brass spout
  • Bass funnel to fill horn
  • Plastic funnel-cap to fit plastic powder canisters
  • Nipple wrench
  • Nipple pick
  • Clean-out screw screwdriver
  • Hand-sewn ball pouch
  • Small tin (portable, field-cleaning kit) with little stuff in it

If you live close enough, ever pass through or have a friend who might, I have at least two pounds of properly-stored Pyrodex RS and a couple hundred #11 caps. I will NOT ship those two items and they are NOT part of the price, but I’ll GIVE them to someone if they can come get them.

$550 for ALL above, plus actual shipping from me to you, OR, if you live in one of those states, to an FFL who will receive from an individual or more if I have to send through an FFL.

$500 for JUST the rifle, plus actual shipping from me to you, OR, if you live in one of those states, to an FFL who will receive from an individual or more if I have to send through an FFL.

First unequivocal “I’ll take it” posted here wins

Ask questions here.

Make offers via PM, as depending on my mood, I MAY be open to trading toward a Rossi 92, 16” 357 Mag carbine or the right stainless, 3”, five-shot 357. Done with projects though and wary of getting into another.

PM for addresses/payment info, FFL stuff, etc. If you already have my cell, feel free to use that, but please post here if you intend to take it, so there are no hard feelings if we make the deal while someone else is posting here.
