I always take a pair of side cuts to the Real FMJ. Till the lead shows.
Helps the lead get out of the jacket easier. Let's any trapped water escape. Prevents little explosions, and "squirting".
Don't worry about the ones with exposed lead. It will just melt right out. Powder coat it just burns off.
"Outside" was the best advice in this thread IMHO.
Only thing I might add is never, even with safety equiptment on, never ever, hang over top the pot. Not even for a quick glance
