MyFirst Marlin

I bought my first Marlin 336 today. After my sad results this year I decided to go big. An I didn't want to fall back on any of my 30cal. because that didn't me a new rifle. I got a 35 Rem. I considered other 35 cal. but they are all more exp. So I went this way. Now I am going to have to beg you guy's to trade for or buy some good cast stuff to test.
Its an older JM barrel stamp but still a microgruve.
It'll be e few weeks before I get if. I gotta go through the GB process, and wait till my next SSC to come.
If anyone is interested I will have a barrel for an Axis small dia. receiver in 7TCU very accurate. Just not my cup of tea any more. Kevin

I've got some RCBS 200 and some Lyman 358315 I could send you if you want to experiment. The RCBS is a good one. PM me.

Most Marlins like the cast on the large side, you probably know that. I size .360. I hope you like the Marlin, they are a great rifle and can be very accurate.

35 Rem is a great cast bullet cartridge. It should be very good on deer. The RCBS 200, or the Lee or NOE version of same, should do very well.
I passed on a 35 Rem Marlin recently. Not sure if it was a good idea or not.

Oh, it also won't likely be your last Marlin. They seem to breed in my safe.

My first rifle was a Marlin in .35 Rem. ca. 1970. Killed over 25 bucks with it and a few bear, all jacketed back then, it has more thump than a .30/30. It's noticeable, puts them down faster. You won't regret either the rifle or the caliber.

I've had the best results with the NOE copy of the rcbs 35-200 and 4198 powder. So far I haven't had much luck pushing the velocity over 1600 fps. That's my spring project.

The Lyman 358315 looks like a pistol bullet. I don't think anyone should hunt deer with them... but a fun small game and plinking bullet with Unique or Red Dot. Hunting loads do well with powders in the 4198 to RL 7 to 3031 range. Match the alloy to velocity. For me harder alloys shoot more accurately at higher velocity and I often water-drop to get this.

That reminds me, I need to cast with that shiny new Lee 35-200 mould tonight and already have the perfect alloy in the pot. If they turn out I can send a few. I also have a 220-grain thump0matic hollow point that is the largest bullet possible to get in a Marlin levergun and feed without putting the gas check below the case neck, but unfortunately the mould will never be made again.

Brad is right, Marlin leverguns breed in the safe, but he forgot to add the part about them not doing it without also sneaking money out of your wallet while you sleep.

Great choice Kevin. I highly recommend getting the NOE copy of the RCBS 35 200, will be a great bullet in that rifle and a real Bambi thumper,

I'm kinda lucky, I only need a few more Marlins to fulfill my wants. A 25-20, 35 Rem, and 375 Win would cover me.
I have a 375 Win in a Win 94 and a Marlin would be more fun to shoot. My Marlins just seem to handle recoil better for me.

You know what's nice if you can find one? A .35 with a rifle length barrel and a shorter mag tube. It will have a waffle top receiver. They hold so nice! Gonna be hard to find though.

My 32-20 is like that. Only holds 5 rounds but sure makes for a sleek, lightweight rifle. I like the 45-70 that way too. Not sure why I would need more than 5 rounds of that!

I would seriously hold out for that barrel configuration no matter the caliber. I bought one such in .30/30 for my little brother 30 years ago for $125. I would pay 4X that today, what a lively rifle.

If you need more than 5 rounds of .45/70 then something has gone seriously wrong!

Sounds like I'd want a sims pad on there. Congrats on the new thumper, can't wait to hear/see how it does.

Have 3356 in 35 Rem - and love it. Caliber thumps a deer for sure. Also have a Remington Mdl 14 in 35 Rem. Both rifles have peep sights. 14 is getting the nod in the deer field this year. Factory for it only, as it is apparently very finicky. For the Marlin in 35, I shoot 38 gr of H335 behind Speer 180 FP and also some cast. Have to look up the cast info. Also have/yet to cast with Lee 35-200 mold.
