Back in the 80's I shot light & heavy bench rest....I may be missing some thing here but I never recall breaking in a barrel! I did fire 5 shot strings & clean between each ( every time...but that was jacketed) Groups right off the bat for each rifle were 1 MOA from a new bore! and tightened up by 100 rounds.
I think a lot has to do with the barrel maker. But from what I have found is a good barrel will shoot first shot or 100 shot very well if you do your part

The last bbl on this rifle had an estimated 6000 rds thru it (give or take a couple
hundred rounds). Shot MOA pretty much beyond 4000, then would stay under
two for another thousand or so. That was a heavy bbl factory savage.
