New extended long range load development

My brother and I were finally able to get out in the woods and do some testing with the .338 Lapua
We have been using Lapua brass and Nosler custom competition 300gr bullets over H1000 powder.

We wanted to buy some more brass but the Lapua stuff isn't cheap ($280 per 100) So we decided to try some PPU brass. I have no complaints so far. We switched bullets and powder also. We wanted to try the new Hornady 285gr ELD bullets and Retumbo powder. 92gr of Retumbo and the ELD seated .010" off the lands proved to be awesome in my rifle! I only had 8 rounds of this load but it shows a lot of promise.

We were shooting prone off a bipod and a rear bag at 270 yards. My first 5 shot group was 1.00"
A cold bore flyer opened up the group or it would have been right around .375"

The last 3 rounds went into a .75" group. Needless to say I was thrilled to get sub 1/2 MOA accuracy at 270 yards( ran out of room, wanted 300)

My brothers rifle wasn't far behind still producing sub MOA 5 shot groups.

Both rifles are set up the same. Savage 12 Target Magnums with Vortex Viper PST 6x24x50 optics.
We are going camping over the July 4th holiday to do some long range shooting at 1760 yards.

I will chrony these loads when I get there. I live at 500 feet above sea level. We will be shooting at 4550 feet above sea level. I am hoping to see somewhere in the neighborhood of 2675-2725fps.

This will keep the bullet super sonic out past a mile. Our steel target is just under 2 MOA in size.
32"x34"

On a side note. An 18" thick Doug Fir does not stop one of these bullets at 270 yards. They were passing right through the tree. Just miles of timber behind us so it was still safe.

I'll post some pics below.

Nice shooting waco! 92 grains? That thing is just a baby .50 for eating powder!

Give us a report on the 1760 testing....

Holy cow. That's an impressive system altogether, rifle, load, optics, and shooter.

Will do.

Thanks Ian. I started at 91.5gr and worked to 92.5gr and 92 was hands down the one. Glad I hit on it the first time out!
The rifle was a gift from my mother. I felt obligated to put a decent optic on it. Those Savage rifles are just tack drivers.

Great groups but you still can't hit the nickel?

I bet the rifle has taught you a fair bit about prone shooting too.

Right dandy shooting, Waco!

Looking forward to the extended range shooting report.

I'd be looking for some surplus powders to use at that charge rate.

waco, you just don't know how spoiled you are with all that fine equipment! Take a look at this attachment...on page 21. How we did things in the old days! Look at these Brits! 2100 yards with a .303! LOOK at that target! Look at those shooting positions! Look at those sights!. Look at those teething rings.....

LOOK at all the mil-surps for sale and the prices. And not a single add for any AR15 stuff.
