New to me...

I just came into possession of a Handi Rifle in .22 Hornet and an 03-A4 sporter. The 03-A4 has a 4 groove barrel. These came from my late father's estate. Dad got the Springfield from the DCM in the 60's for $10 plus $4.50 shipping, IIRC. Dad bought a stock from Bishop which he finished and a friend did the metal work.

I plan to shoot cast in both but know little about them. Please share any tips and suggestions you may have based upon your experience.

Thanks,

Tony

An unmodified 03-A4 action will buy you a very nice AR10, FWIW. Most Springfields will shoot very will with 16.0 grains of 2400 and any cast bullet over 190 grains sized 0.311". NEF 22 Hornets are pretty regular 3 inch groupers at 100 yards. But some are better than others, depending up barrel blank. HTH Ric

Ben,

I have a digital camera but have not used it in years. I can only assume it still works. For the next several months I'll be dealing with dad's estate, selling and buying real estate, building a house, moving, etc. It will be months before I get back into photography, loading, casting, shooting and the like. I look forward to resuming my retirement.

Ric,

Thanks for the input. I need to get some 2400. Years ago I used 2400 in the .30 Carbine but not since. With 4759 gone 2400 fits a lot of applications for cast in rifles. As this was my dad's rifle I'll hang on to it and give it to my nephew when I can no longer use it. I did some very preliminary load development with the Handi for my dad. With jacketed bullets I recall that the rifle had 5 shot, 100 yard 1.5" potential. Dad was happy and used the rifle for turkeys. He took the Hornet and the 06 into the deer blind and shot one or the other depending on the target. He took several turkeys and a fox with the Hornet. Over many decades dad took 1 to 3 deer per season with the 06.
