California's Central Coast Amid The Insanity
I've read about the Katyn murders, but didn't know that it was, essentially, one man's doings.

he was also fond of ''interrogating'' the wives of many of his prisoners.
he would leverage them until they gave in, and then kill the husbands anyway.

I never realized how horrible the eastern front in WWII was until I read ”Stalingrad - The Fateful Siege” by Antony Beevor. Stalin probably killed more of his own officers than the Germans did...

If you want a comprehensive look into the eastern front during WWII, read: Barbarossa, The Russia-German Conflict 1941-1945" by Alan Clark.
OR
Enemy at the Gates, The Battle for Stalingrad, by William Craig

It is difficult to comprehend how bad it was.

I've read Enemy At The Gates. "Ratzenkrieg"--a term I'll never forget. Monsters of this sort exist, and of the things I did at work I am proudest of is assisting in housing several such people for the duration of their lives in a place where they can no longer prey upon others.

I’ll check them out, thanks! The Fall of Berlin 1945” again by Antony Beevor is another good book. And another really interesting read on a different note is “DDay Through German Eyes” by Holger Echkhertz. Make sure you get book one and book two in the same softcover book. It’s first person accounts of Germans who fought on the beaches (and one pilot in the air) during the DDay invasion.

Since I was a kid I’ve always read war books but mostly about the air war in WWII and books written by guys who fought on the ground in Vietnam. I didn’t realize before I read the Staligrad story just how nuts Hitler was Also read Memoirs of Albert Speer which confirmed a lot of that. Interesting is somewhat of an understatement I guess...

I haven't read Clark's book but have scribbled it down on my to read list, thanks P&P. I did read Enemy at the Gates and saw the movie also, very telling. A good friend once spent some time over there on business and did a Stalingrad tour (this was before the collapse of the USSR). He said every person he met on the street who discovered he was from the United States bent his ear about how much they despised war and to tell everyone back home their story and how all the PEOPLE just wanted peace.

First person accounts of combat are as much a release for the writer as for educating the reader.
/\ Assuming the writer was actually there and is telling the truth.

Historical accounts complied by a writer that separately interviewed MULTIPLE participants of the same event, confirmed the accuracy of the individual reports (often by interviewing participants on BOTH sides of the conflict) and then writes only about what is known to be factual - are even better records of history.

When The Wall came down.......because of the movies....they knew what was on the other side. Not what they had been told was there.
