Period view of venting... 1920...

I'm trying to picture this in my head. I'm not really seeing how it would allow it to vent, but would make the bullets slightly out of round.

I suspect it was aimed at single cavity moulds . Writing paper of the era was maybe 14# and like slick news paper . No felt tips or ball points and the ink well was still a normal desk top thing . Every 1st class letter was weighed . Vellum paper was a shelf item everywhere and the Parker 51 wasn't a thing yet . The train still reined as the best way to travel coast to coast and a smoking hot Model T all hot rodded out was good for mph .
The Indy 500 had a fastest lap just over 99 mph and a winners average speed of just over 88 mph won by Gaston Chevrolet . The guy not the sponsoring dealer like Pensky or GM .

A lot changes in 100 yr .

I didn't think about it being a single cavity mold.

That's funny about the Nascar. I have a bit of a lead foot, and will drive every bit of the speed limit. My dad, is the other way and I don't think I've ever seen him drive faster then 60 MPH. We went to a gun show once, and I picked him up. Cruising down the interstate he looks over at my speedometer which was locked a 80 MPH, and he starts ranting about how that was how fast Nascar was when he was a kid and normal humans can't react fast enough to be doing these speeds.

At the casting bench in the sky. RIP Bret.

Not much difference between putting a thin cigarette type paper on a side/corner of the block and using a piece of stainless furnace tape except the tape sticks easier.

I would also tend to agree with your dad. Based on the thousands of accidents I investigated, the average human has a tough time reacting to things at 55mph, much less at 80. It's one thing when it's the car 100 yards ahead also doing 80 making a lane change. It's another when it's a deer jumping out of the brush or a kid on a 4 wheeler riding the shoulder.

Just sayin'...
