Premium powder

I have been powder coating for 3yrs and have only used HF powder for my tumble coating...never used a gun...and have been pleased with it. As I have said here and over on CB...I don't do this for pretty and I don't do rifle...so, good enough to perform well, is all that I am looking for with PC.

But, week before last, I decided that I would order one of Smoke's sample packs and just give his stuff a try. I am assuming his is "premium" powder as I see a lot of folks raving about it. Anyway, it came in the other day and I don't have anything to try it on, but I might fire up the pot this weekend and try to get some fodder to use it on. However, I am a cheap skate and I doubt that I will order any more...will just have to see how much it takes. I can buy 4lbs of HF for what 1lb of his costs, delivered...since I am not looking for eye candy or coating something persnickety like rifle bullets...this 1lb variety pack will probably wind up my use of high dollar powder. But, I am looking forward to trying it...as long as that pound lasts...I just hope it doesn't change my mind.LOL

It's going to take you a long time using up a pound of Smoke's powder. The powder is noticeably different in consistency and feels quite a bit finer in grain, at least to me. Only suggestion I'd have it to do the tumble routine and set up the bullets to bake and use non stick AL foil. I get excellent results this way and you should as well.

It will take you a long time to use up a pound. Applying with ASBB in a sealed container and picking the bullets individually wastes virtually no powder whatsoever and I'm on track to get 10-15K per pound. Even if you dump the bullets on a screen and salvage the excess powder in a catch pan or use a 5-gallon bucket with a screen basket your waste should be negligible. Be careful not to inhale the dust from Smoke's powder.

I use the ASBB technique as does Ian and add this touch; I gently tap the cast bullet on the side of the container to remove any excess powder as I am setting them up on the AL Foil. I get great coverage and virtually no runs.

Thanks for the encouragement about the mileage. I just put my bullets in my tumbler...about 500 at the time...let it run for a few minutes and dump them into a colander to shake the excess off, them dump and bake. So, I will be able to capture the excess powder and I am sure they will look good as this is definitely finer powder.

And, thanks, Ian...for the headsup on breathing that fine powder...I will use a surgical mask when handling his powder.

I just leave them...I will spread them out a little if needed, but mostly, they spread themselves out pretty well. Doesn't really matter if they are touching each other, which they normally are because I fill the pans up pretty well so as to cook as many as I can, at the time.
