Push mower choices?

20 years on a Honda mower,
No engine work but some on drive train,
Probably made 10 times what I paid for it $475.00
Neighbor said I was nuts for spending that much.
Should have bought 3 of them

My next will be electric. I have needed and wanted a new mower for three years I’m just waiting for my Sears War horse to die. Thought it was done last spring. But only needed two extra pulls to start. I bought it a week before I bought this house in 1997. One carburetor rebuild and bi yearly oil changes.
Neighbor has had electric since the 1970’s he says. Back when it needed an extension cord. Today these newer models are quite powerful! His yard is just a little smaller Then mine and he easilly doesn’t on single charge.

good luck

I posted about the new to me plastic decked Honda lawn mower in this thread back at Christmastime. I've used it and I really like it.

The Snapper Bagger push mower I had been using (not shown below) for the last 3 years with Harbor freight Predator engine got sold last week to the Son of a close friend...His family just bought a house, I gave him a deal he couldn't refuse.

I had another Snapper self-propel laying around for parts, it had a weak briggsy engine, I always thought about doing a engine swap to bring it back to life, because it was in excellent shape, except for the briggsy being very weak.

Friday, I seen a craigslist add for a Honda HRR216 with bad tranny for $95. I called and made a stupid low offer and the guy says I can have it for that price, if I come get it right away and pay cash. So that was Friday afternoon's project. the Swap went well with no major problems, bolted right up, and was able to use the existing honda pulley for self-propel and existing Honda blade mount, so I could use Honda's excellent Twin blades...Plus the pulley and blade mount on the briggsy were rusted beyond removal.

I didn't take any before photos. here is the finished project.

BTW, while this grey Honda deck looks good, it was in bad shape underneath, previous owner
welded parts together so Bagger would stay on, and there was a separate sheild/ring mounted
with engine bolts, that must have been there to keep grass clipping away from belt and pulley
but it was partly rusted threw and bent up. The belt was missing anf the tranny was rusted tight.
Anyway, from what I saw, I'd never recommend the model HRR216 Honda mower to anyone...JUNK !

Winelover, I look at lawnmowers the same as toasters. Fresh oil every year (3/4 quart of 5X30 Mobil 1) and filtered gas. B&S new engines last 3 years, Honda's about five and Yamaha's about 7. Buy them in September here for about $200 (pushers). Don't start? Having problems? I donate them to the HS shop class for projects. FWIW
. Thats disappointing... I bought a brand new Sears in 1997 when I bought this house. Its a 6hp self Propelled LG rear wheel 22" mower. For the last three years I have expected to have to replace it... Each year it starts nearly first pull. Same this year. One single pull. I think its a Briggs engine. I did rebuild the carb once..

ours has been kind of grumpy the two times we have used it this year.
the little pumper bulb for the gas has been going out for a couple of years now and I had to give it a little spritz of ether through the filter to get it fired up the other day, then it run just fine.

the engine is on it's second deck and a Frankenstein affair it is from there, but it's going on past 15 years old now so no reason to panic about something so minor at this point.
it seems like the engine is getting a little tighter these days,, meh there's another one folded up in the shed there and another engine minus a few parts in the corner..

I have had my Tecumseh push mower since the 80's. It is a total dog, has always been. If grass is thick at all, or a little damp you have to mow in slow motion. It has 3.5 horse but Aparently no torque. Uses a pint of oil every time I mow.
But the darne thing just won't die.

At large, whereabouts unknown.
HRR216 was the cheapie, entry level Honda. I almost bought one years ago when I worked for the local Honda dealer, but since I worked there, the salesman steered me away from it.

I have always had good luck with B&S engines on mowers, run them 10 years or more. Change oil every year or three, sharpen the blade and clean/replace air filter every year. Usually need a new plug after 5 yrs or so. My big problem is the mower decks. I am not real good about cleaning out the damp grass and crud underneath and the decks rust out on me. Just thinking, never even replaced the belt on my old Husqvarna self propelled with the 6 3/4hp Briggs & Stratton. I gave to my brother after10 years. He thinks he can weld up the deck.

I think y'all saw the popped rod on the 6-7 yr old $40 yard machine mower ....... probably would have gone further with more oil ..... Oops . Darn kids .....

The new Walmart wonder powered by Bugs and Strappin' @ a whopping 4.5 ftlbs I'm impressed so far as long as the cut is under 3" it'll cut about as fast as we can walk . We should probably spring for a rider but we're ok as we are for now we only have to mow about a 1/4 of acre and that's getting close to some more of it covered up with goat yards .
