For 243 with 87 gr Loverin bullet. My book shows 7 grs starting load. Is this powder safe to start at 5 grs. I think I have to lower my muzzle velocity with this bullet. Alloy is 1/40. Plain base. Thanks..

Reducing charge to 4-5 grains should be safe. 700X tolerates airspace in the case, ignites easily and burns completely. Only drawback is that its larger particle size makes measuring small charges more difficult. Powder measure setting for 5 grains of Bullseye meters about 4 grains of 700X. I would not further reduce as you may stick a bullet in the barrel.

Not sure about your data. Lyman CBH 3rd ed shows the following
Lyman 245496 at 83 GR Lyman #2 in 243 Winchester
Start load 8.5 grains 700X at 1684 fps.

Consider that significant reduction, large case, possible stuck bullet. I not think that much of a reduction prudent. Maybe start backing off from the start load in .2 grain steps to find where results are erratic. Then increase back to reliable grouping. Keeping in mind this will be a summer only load and cold weather will change results.

700-X experience is paltry for me personally--it was all in handguns, and it was positive.

In 243 with castings Lyman #245496 and RCBS #6mm-95-SP both shot their best groups between 1600-1800 FPS. This is a real sweet spot for the bullets, though achieved with Alliant 2400 powder using 14.0-16.0 grains and WLR primers. Ground squirrels despise these loads.
