Sorry for your loss, Jimbo.

I was pretty well crushed about 8.5 years back when we had to say goodbye to our best buddy Spooter. Man's best friend I believe to be an understatement at times for the compassion & understanding they give us. I imagine heaven to be a place where we can be together again.

Get another as soon as you can. It won't replace the relationship you've lost but, forging a new one will help you heal & many need a good forever home.

Thanks to all for the support. I never knew how much Sam was just one of us. Went for a walk yesterday and that is when it really made my aware of how much that dog was a part of my life. There are so many things that I now realize that she* did that I just took for grant it and the things she did everyday that was just part of being with us.
so, thanks to all for your support.

* Sam was a female. The grandkids named her Samantha, which quickly morphed into Sam. She was a mix of black lab and pirineese ( I think that is how you spell it).

So very sorry Jimbo.... dogs are family, and it really hurts when they have to leave us. Hang on to the fun/funny moments as long as you can.

Sorry to hear it . My current pup is 9 so hopefully he will be around a while longer . I've had a dog of some kind since 1958 but I think this one will probably be the last , never find another one like him .

I had my first "hunting buddy" 12 yr and had a mountain of life changes and substitute dogs within weeks of her departure . I only had the last mutt just shy of 5 yr from a barely weaned pup we were almost sharing socks from day one . Took me a week to not expect to see her at the door . I don't think I'll get another I got cat that's 12 that likes to sleep on me . Longest I've ever had a cat around . I expect to have her used up almost any time maybe a couple of more years .

Many of the folks here remember when I lost Timber to osteosarcoma. That was just a little over a year ago.

Although I’m sitting in a large house with almost no furniture (it’s in a moving van on its way), Timber’s ashes are housed in a 20 MM GI ammo can not 10 feet away from me. One day my ashes will be in there with him.

Funny how the best of humanity is often brought out not by other humans, but by our furry partners and loved ones.

Uncle Jimbo, no one else could have given Sam more love and a happier life than you. She was very lucky to have had you.

As time goes by, I know I was the lucky one to have had Sam.

At the casting bench in the sky. RIP Bret.
Never an easy time. I've tried to harden myself to loving dogs over the years after having my heart broken so many times. Can't do it for all of them. There was an essay by Gene Hill or someone that wrote like him ( pretty sentimental stuff) that basically said that the best cure for a heart broken by the death of a beloved dog was a puppy. Something to think about.

Seven years ago, we had to put Charlie, our 14 year old Golden Retriever, down. A tough thing to do, and though I steeled myself to be with him to the end -- I rubbed behind his ears till the end -- the tears still flowed. I wanted Charlie to be our last dog, but, fortunately!, my wife found Duke, a Cocker/Poodle mix. Duke has more personality than some people I run across, and is arguably smarter than a modern-day high school graduate.

Bret is absolutely right. Get another pup ASAP. Took us 2 or 3 months to find another dog we would feel comfortable commuting to. We never ever leave our dogs alone; not for 5 minutes.
Remember, your not replacing Samantha (impossible), you’re giving another dog a chance to win the lottery when it comes to a great life.
