Savage Mod 40, 22 Hornet

I bought a Mod 40 Sav when they first came out. A dandy looking little rifle, and first rounds out of the box with it were MOA. However I had problems with the bolt not being smooth, and sometimes partially binding.
After a couple hundred rounds, the binding became more and more of a problem. So I took it apart, and it being a single shot has only a little carrier platform for the cartridge to ride on. This platform has one small screw only holding it on to the receiver, and the platform has an appendage that sticks up from the platform that is a bolt guide of some kind, and this appendage is probably the problem. The platform is a stamping out of some kind of sheet metal, and it and the way it is attached to the receiver is a rinky dink Rube Goldburg type creation. Now that I have taken it apart, I can not get the screw that holds the platform in to hold it back in place, as the threads on the platform are at best minimal and I believe poorly cut. I have written to savage with my complaint concerning this platform and the lousy engineering that went into it. They acknowledged my complaint, and said that I would hear from their Tech dept. I am not holding my breath, and will wait another week to see if I hear from them before I am forced to take the rifle to a gunsmith.

I am wondering if any one on this forum has a Mod 40, and if so if you have had like experiances. I note also that I no longer find the Mod 40 listed in the Savage inventory. That probably should have told me something.

I have a number of Savages, and Stevens and have never had a problem with them.

Any help or knowledge of the Sav 40 and the problems I have experienced would be very much appreciated.

KHornet,

Based on your description of the workmanship inside the action of the rifle , I'd say that it might be a good idea for me to stand clear of a Model 40.

I hope that Savage will make the necessary repairs to your rifle.

I can stop by and take a look. I certainly can't make it any worse?
Will the rifle load without the ramp? Just start the round into the chamber?

Well it has been over 3 weeks since I had a reply from Savage, saying that their Tech Dept. would contact me. Glad I didn't hold my breath. Guess I will take it to a gunsmith.

How did your gun issue end up? I picked up a new old stock model 40 myself a few years back. I have around 400 rounds through it thus far. It has been boring for the most part from the get go. No bug holes but it stays in 1 1/2"@ 100 if I do my part.

Lol, no I am not stalking you Paul just chasing down some of your posts on the 22 Hornet.

Life has been hectic and I haven't done anything to the rifle. Will probably take
it to a gunsmith in Jan.
