I sold a CMMG 300 BO upper to a well known member on the other site and now need to ship it without USPS bending the crap out of it. Solution: 4" thin wall PVC pipe; pad the upper uber tight and glue the end caps on the pipe. What say you?

Sounds like it would work. I've been saving the boxes that PSA sends their uppers in, to me. It's just a flat cardboard box, with egg crate padding inside it. I've never had an issue with any damage on anything they have sent.

I once sent a barreled action off to be rebarreled in a heavy wall pipe. I had found a section of 4”, 3/8 wall plastic oil pipeline left on our property and used an appropriate length of it. Gunsmith kept it and sent the newly barreled action back in a flimsy, cheap gun case. He said mine was overkill, but there wasn’t much chance of damage.

Actually the caps I'm talking about are the thin one's the builders use to temporarily close off a stub, they are a ID fit. They are kind of a press fit. Figure that with a lot of tape should do the trick.

Excellent idea, Gary, and one that would have prevented some post office gorilla from severely damaging the stock of a rifle I bought from out-of-state.

Stuff I've gotten was just in well packed cardboard. Be careful, I used to ship metal detectors around the country in cardboard, severa were damaged. Changed to plywood boxes. Then investigating, UPS was moving them with fork lift and dragging them from one end of the terminal to the other. Heavy safe packing often gets abused more then simple stuff. Put something around the muzzle to protect crown.

@Gary , this is an example of why I paid for you to buy that Plano case. Case arrived without a scratch.

I just shipped a barrel to a member here and was serously considering PVC, but found a sturdy cardboard tube instead.

Come to think of it I have a heavy cardboard tube I got some steel rod shipped in, might work. Thanks for the memory jog.

Neather of us could imagine what this poor box had suffered through.
He waited for me to open, and inspect.
It got sent back!

I bought an old Rem 514 that looked pristine in condition and when the package arrived the stock was snapped in two at the wrist. It was in stellar condition except for the broken stock. I kept it and did a repair and really like the firearm.

I swear some employee's do that on purpose.
stocks snapped at the wrist is the most common damage.
