Got around to loading them up tonight, going to try and send them next weekend. I’d like to thank everyone for your input and criticisms, as this load has taken shape, it is much appreciated. This is my first true cast bullet work up. I think we are going to see some good results. Range results to come but here’s where I am tonight. New Starline brass Winchester large rifle primers, IMR4198 powder. The bullets are red PC some 457193 that a friend sent me. And the orange are the 457124, all sized to .458 and the weights are 410 and 397 respectively. I’m excited to see what they do. Again thank you guys for helping a new generation of cast shooter.

Side Note: please excuse the mess on my bench the new loading room is still under construction.

Hahaha. Your new at "mess" too I see. :p ;) :p
45/70 is a good one to start with. Bug bullets are easy in fingers and fat wide cases easy on eyes!
I have about 400 Lee 350g Ranch Dogs all cast waitin on size and GC on my sizin bench right now! Never shot many of the 457193's but allot of 457191's and 457192's! The 457124 is a main stay too my buddies Sharps replica LOVES THEM!! 5744 for him. But 3031 has also been a powder to recon with. 4198/RE7 are my "butt Kickin" 45/70 powders when I want TRex stopping ammo. But ya can load it mild too it just works so well in heavies for me.

Thanks guys, my bench is usually an organized mess, but it’s just a mess right now. Cant find anything.

@CWLONGSHOT these are going to be for hunting that’s why I’m trying to get the velocity on up otherwise I’d be fine with them way on down the power scale.

I may have to get hold of some pure lead and just add tin and try it. All I have now is just scrap and COWW. which 500 bullets would last me a lifetime for hunting purposes and the occasional target shot and 0 verifications. Which I’ll eventually expand into 7mm-08 that’s my next cast project.

Finally got around to shooting them today, still got run out by rain but I managed to get some data. First off all the conversation about recoil, it is true it is no fun to shoot this thing in the 1800 plus range. 5 shots not bad, 27 is pretty rough.

Too the point,
Lyman 457-124 IMR4198 sized to .458 and PC
41gr 1818 FPS average
42gr 1864 FPS average
43gr 1926 FPS average
Lyman 457-193
40gr 1779FPS
41gr 1834 FPS
So, I had 1 more charge on the 124, and 2 more in the 193s, but weather wouldn’t allow for them to go down range.
Plus side is I had 0 leading 0 PC laid down in barrel, so I have successfully driven my first Plain based projectiles past 1900 FPS, for this I am happy.
The rifle has been notorious for slinging the cold shot high then settling down and shooting decent groups same thing is displayed here today. (See Pic) I use the term decent loosely.
I still have a ways to go on this but for a first round I don’t think it was too bad. Last group was the best minus the flyer I had gotten the flinch from the recoil I think by the last two groups.
Center groups are the 124 2 groups to the left are the 193s not complained with a 1.8 inch group at 100 yards but I’d like to see it under 1.5”.

And all the rest of the groups were 2.5 to 4 inches. Noting special.AaA.jpeg

Also is IMR 4198 safe to download? I’m thinking of dropping to 35.0 grains and starting my work up over. That 32 inch tube is letting these babies’ scream.

Can't answer your question, but can say that I use 24 to 26 grains of IMR 4198 in an original Model '76 Winchester chambered in 45-60, to mimic black powder pressures. Keep in mind, that charge is occupying a slightly smaller case.

Yea finally realized last night 36 grains is published in my Lyman book for a 1896. I’ll start there and try again should be a little easier in the shoulder.

One of my friends has been shooting 28gr 4198 for years under a .460'' 350gr which is slightly below suggested starting load without filler.
Up to now,he is the only guy to have shot a perfect 50/50 target at 100.
