My new Ranch Dog 190 gr. , 35 Cal. gas checked cast bullet may end up with more application than just my 357 Maximum, in my Ruger # 1 rifle.

Today, I loaded a cylinder full for testing purposes to be shot out of my L Frame, Model 686, 3" stainless revolver. The load was 12.0 grs. of 2400 with the 190 gr. Ranch Dog , G/C in 357 Mag. cases, Win. Small pistol primers.

Maybe just what I'm looking for from my 3" barrel Stainless Model 686 ?

It looks like a " HAMMER " !

I have two 686's.
One is the 3" that you see above.
The other is a 6" that you see below :

I find it interesting that the later 3" 686 like yours has the short ejector rod as compared to the mid '80s (US Customs Svc) 3" that had the full length ejector rod.

That load should be a handful from the 686s.

it's amazing how super similar [and yet subtly different] the older Rossi revolvers are to the 686 smiths.
even the grips are the same finger groove rubber Hogue type.

I dunno if I'd want to touch off 190grs. in my 6" rossi.
the grips are too narrow/small around for my hands to handle anything much heavier than speedy 160's.

Had some 180 RNFP 357 loads for my Rossi carbine, that were printing too low. Decided to try them in the the Ruger LCR. Surprisingly, not bad recoil for a 17 ounce revolver. Powder was maximum charges of AA-7 (data out of their red covered manual).

see those numbers in the upper right corner?
that is the flow temp needed for your lube-sizer.

this lube should do well in lower temps than carnuba red it should go down to about 32-35 or so before you notice it acting like the red does at 40.

That is a good looking design there Ben!
I had 686 for a while, ran across a gent that liked it more than I did. I moved onto the GP line and not looked back.
I use a 220 LBT in my FA with a dose of H110/296, big long shove is how I would describe recoil.
The GP's are fed a steady diet of 180-190's. I have found them to give me better accuracy across the board.

Did you ever try those out, Ben? I've had this thread in the back of my mind for a while, being one who really likes the "hammer" concept for revolvers, particularly in the field. I use 340s in my .45 Colt revolvers at about 700 fps for ending fights with game animals without ending my hearing.

I like the looks of this and I have a 686 too. Does this mean I will have to order my 5th mold for August? Well, it is my birthday month!

Love the 3" Ben.#3 son bought one on my recommendation. It's a handful with full power loads but....a genuine sweetheart with mid level. He's mainly a traditional bow freak,so this was a purchase with that duty in mind....but,never leaves home without it.The barrel cyl gap is a touch close @.003" so the CB's need to be especially"clean"...which is sumthin this ole revolver shooter hasn't run across, like, ever? It'll tie up with ANY...let's say that again ANY buildup on cyl face.

Meaning,we all talk about fit this, fit that...hardness vs velocity, yadayada. But how "clean" the transition is on a tight gap revolver hasn't surfaced?Least,I haven't seen any discussion on the matter. And I have a 744 DW(adj gap).

I've been on the phone with "possibly" the best bowyer on the....uhh,planet.We're designing my 2018 tournament bow....

Just sayin, folks get into this groove...and for whatever reason think, this or that?My question still stands, transitions in/on the critical period?...how can I clean up that period? On a revolver it seems to be that, jump between cyl to brrl.Sorry for the complete esoteric rambling......it's gauldang clear from this viewpoint.Gets lost on the enterweeb.
