357 revolver for deer

Usually I see them going into and out of the WalMart store.

What is it with WM and Bigfoot?

I was in there one day, several years ago, and I kept running into a guy who looked like he was trying to look like me. Every time I saw him, he was looking at me like I was trying to look like him. After about 13 mutual sightings, I tried to ditch him and still finish my shopping. Caught me in produce. I relaxed, let myself get penned in by a woman who didn't look like she ever ate a vegetable in her life, which was suspicious in itself.

He started talking to me - about Bigfoot. "There's some around here..." Told me where he lived what acreage he farmed, told me he saw Bigfoot on a RR track frequently and that Bigfoot always just looked at him and casually turned away ad walked off into the woods. One day, when he went to pick up rocks in a certain corner of his field, he got there and all the rocks were already picked up and stacked just inside the tree line. As he snooped around a bit, he found that several VERY large cut stones from a defunct bridge abutment had been moved also and stacked neatly near the new bridge. He was sure Bigfoot had done it.

That guy bent my ear for a long time before I cut him off and told him my frozen foods were melting in my cart. No idea WHY he chose me to confide in and am not entirely sure it wasn't set up as a joke, but I saw no trace of anyone I knew smart enough to set that up. I've never seen this guy again since that day, but one of my students told me he saw me talking to the guy. I asked him why the hell he hadn't saved me from that one-sided discussion! He said we was a little creeped out that I and the other guy looked so much alike.

Neither I nor my "twin" could be mistaken for Bigfoot, by the way.

Oh, and I've never, but I would use the 357 revolver for deer if I were shooting at about 50 yards, if I had one with a 6" barrel, but I don't. Won't hesitate to use the 18" carbine if the opportunity arises, and maybe press it to no more than 100 yards. That would be with a 180 grain WFN at about 1700 - 1800 fps from the carbine.

Bigfoot? No. Doubt it'd be necessary if he's as docile and thoughtful as that guy in WM was trying hard to convince me. He was as serious as he were talking about the soil condition or how his cows were doing on his farm.

I never go to Walmart. And that's why I don't.
We live 15 miles out in the country from our County Seat. We lost our grocery store and the City Fathers have been unable to attract one. We have two choice for groceries, Kwik Trip Convenience Store and Wal-Mart. I get plenty of Walmartian exposure.
Hey Johnny, how'd your deer hunt go?

Worse deer season ever. Not a deer in sight. Only 1 other hunter in two weeks. I have no idea where they are hiding. I have gotten pictures, way after dark. One real nice buck. Think I'm going to get a night vision scope.

I miss Walmart being open all night. Go after 2 AM, there's never any trouble, no crowds . . . it is about as least-unpleasant as the place ever gets. Daytime is another matter, too many people.

Everyone establishes their own limits on the range that they can take an animal. I've always felt that with your pistol / rifle , if you're unable to put a bullet in the mouth of a coffee cup at a known distance, it may very well be difficult to make a quick, clean kill on the deer at that distance.
Does a 5 gal bucket count

Getting back to .357 revolvers for deer. Do you need a gas check to shoot your cast bullet accurately. Would you be using 2400 or AA9 to push that bullet?

Gas checks have always seemed like a waste on handgun bullets to me. It seems like one could get about all they could get out of the .357 with the heavier bullets without having to resort to them.

The gun is certainly capable. I have found deer to be pretty easy to kill, put something through the lungs and they go down pretty quick. I know bowhunters who routinely get deer at close ranges with clean kills. It helps to have an unalarmed deer at the shot as well. If I were to do it, I'd pick a pretty much top end load with a reasonably heavy bullet that has a good meplat, then practic a lot from realistic hunting positions and have a plan to get close.

I think this question is more of how good a deer hunter and shooter you are than whether the cartridge is capable. Hope to see you successful in this next deer season.

Yep, gas checks aren't necessary on cast bullets.................until they are. Gas checks allow the use of softer alloys, without the risk of leading..............which is detrimental to accuracy. For deer hunting, the softer the alloy the better.............as evidenced by quick black powder round ball kills.

And I get that. Just can't see where a heavy .358 bullet drivin at what a .357 Magnum can deliver wouldn't go all the way through a deer on a reasonable shot (sane range, broadside shot, more or less) and deliver a quickly mortal wound channel with loads that wouldn't need a check.

Take it for what it's worth, I have never killed a deer with a handgun, but I doubt I'd have much trouble doing so when I decide to try it. I will be doing a whole lot of practice to replicate hunting with whatever I choose to use. I also get that he used bigger bores, but I seem to remember Elmer Kieth didn't care for gas checks, again, take that for what it's worth, he was an opinionated guy and a lot of his info is pretty dated now, but no question he did a lot of shooting of game with a revolver.
