don't feel bad I have shot the 458 in a handgun.
it really wasn't much worse than a 45-70....

Never shot the .458 Win Mag, but a .45-70 Marlin GG loaded to 2100 fps
with a 405 Rem JSP is pretty attention getting. That is a 7.5 lb rifle, and
the stock is not exactly optimized for recoil reduction. Did a five shot
group at 2000ish and a five shot group at 2100ish and decided that I
was entirely done with that end of the .45-70 load spectrum. I had added
a good Kick-EEZ pad, very effective, first thing when I got the GG. Same
bullet at 1750 is very shootable and kills very well on large stuff like
wildebeest and zebra.

Add 100 grains and 50 fps, not going to make it more fun, although most
of the rifles are more in the 11 lb range, with better stock shapes, has to help a
good bit.
I was on the bench, too, chronoing and shooting groups simultaneously.

My clearest memory is a mental note - "do NOT do this again." Not truly
painful, no injury, but really unpleasant stomping and banging. Hold on
tight, pull rifle into shoulder with left hand, sit up relatively straight, do not
lean fwd into it.

When I shot the 3 rds of 458 (Offhand) I only weighed about 160 lb.
Three rounds was enough, no bruses or black and blues, BUT it did
affect my balance for the rest of the day. The 3 rds of 460 Weatherbe
(offhand) did burse me a bit, but not bad, and at the time I weighed
about 225 (am over 6' tall) BUT it also affected my balance for the
rest of the day. Think I was about 22 or 23 at the time.

I offered to shoot a 4th and 5th round from the 460
but the owner reminded me of the cost of a round of 460. I shot it
because I had been shooting a 375 H&H when he drove up, and
asked me if I would like to shoot a MAN's rifle.

Well, having an ego
myself at that time, I said something to the effect that "if it has a
trigger I will shoot it!". I never made that statement again! Was
old enough at that time (late 30's) to know better, but obviously
did not. Did keep the three rounds on paper however at 50 yds,
for braggingrights (for what ever they are worth).

.460 W, lets see - 500 gr at 2600 fps. That ought to be pretty impressive. Hope it
was a heavy rifle. I had the opportunity to fire .458 and .460 at a "demo day" by
gun and ammo makers at a local range. I chose to buy a 10 round burst with a
Gatling in .45-70 instead. I considered the big boomers, just wasn't that interested. The
heavy .45-70 loads had entirely satisfied whatever curiosity I may have had about
the elephant cartridges. I have a number of different example cartridges including
a 500 Nitro Express, .458 WinMag and .460 Wby but just to look at.

.458 Socom with 500-grain bullets moseying along at about 980 fps is about as much as I want these days, especially from a 5.2lb AR-15. Already have had several surgeries for retinal tears in the past and really don't want to have to go through that again, especially since I've been very strongly advised to give up the martial arts, shotgunning, and wild theme park rides unless I want to try and do those things by braille.

I'm imagining the Op Rod Spring being wound of rectangular wire, like a die spring. Yes, I'm kidding, but maybe only half kidding.
