In the late 1980s I carried a S&W Model 459 in 9mm at work. In those days our coin of the realm was the Winchester Silvertip 115 grain STHP. I still think these are decent loads--from the 459 they clocked 1200-1225 FPS. Stats like those will do the ride the river with, especially during that time of my career when I worked solo in plainclothes almost exclusively in shagnasty places.
Like in many venues, the FBI's condemnation of the Winchester 9mm Silvertip round was smoke & mirrors. It's real abomination was the touting of their excreble Sub-Sonic 147 grain round in its place. Enough said, I've hacked at you all about this 16 dozen times previously.
In my sitch, thank goodness that at the same time my shop 'Went Sub-Sonic' they added another 'Sub-Sonic' round that worked......the 40 S&W. At work, I went 40 S&W and never looked back. The 9mm was relegated to off-duty and varmint hunting roles, since my SIG P-226 is such a tack-driver. Now in retirement my ammo choices (and calibers) are much less limited, so when the 9mm gets carried as goblin dissuader its magazine is stoked with REAL 9mm rounds these days.
