One last thought before I get to work, yes ,I have to do some.
Ben's Red should be the perfect lube for Loverines'.

I could research it I guess but I'll ask here. Is the 311467 a heavier version than the 466? I do have a few Louverin's including the 311466. I have also seen these in 30 cal with a flat point
{in pics}, what would that # be?

I have a single cavity I bought from a friend that was hollowpointed by Buckshot. It was a learning experience for me to learn to use it but the sure are pretty when it all comes together. 311466.

Have always liked Loverin molds. They all have shot well in my rifles. Also, when you lube all of the grooves, and 2 or more are above the neck they look cool. Ya I know, waste of lube.

I wish Lyman still made the 323471.

Yes, it is a shame that one is gone.
I'm fortunate to own an IDEAL 323471.
One of the most accurate 8 mm cast bullets that I've ever fired.

Ben

I fired the 1st 5 rounds in the group below :

Then Jason shot a group with 8 rounds :

noe makes something super similar to the 471.
I got one of AL's 140gr T/L molds some time back to fit in my tight throated Remington in 8 mauser.
pushed by 32 grs of 4895 and coated in my version of 45/45 lube it moves right along.

the NEI 150gr loverign 4 cavity copy is a joy to cast with [should be a copy of the 466] sized to 310 it flings out of my 30-30 bolt guns with about as much energy as the rifles are capable of.
you gotta love a walt mold, I haven't cast with it in 6+ years and still have 5-600 of them made up from the last casting session.
the other one I have is a slightly modified loverign design that weighs a bit over 215grs and is for the 31 cal rifles with the loooong throats.
Tom at accurate cut this one and it too makes some super nice bullets with ease.
when I quit goofing around with the swaged 5.7 brass bullets in most of them this mold will get a workout in the 303's and the oldest girls 7.7 [which also shoots the nei boolit rather well]

Ben,

What's your success with the smaller brother, the 165 grain 323470?

Hmm. Sounds problematic. Side by side the 323470 & 323471 look to have similar bodies. It's the nose that longer on the 471. Shame that the better bullet design was retired.

if you find the C.O.G. on the two bullets you'll probably see why one is slightly better than the other.

If you ask me, Ben has already done all of the foot work. If I could get the same accuracy @ 50 yards with the 470 as Ben does with the 471, I'd be quitely casting right now. I'll have to do some 50 yard testing. Most of my experimenting is at 100 yards, so it's "Granny Smiths" vs "Golden Delicious" at this point.

A word here on 50 yd groups vs 100 yd:
At 50 yard open sights ( usually receiver) Old guys can see better.... Heck even with a 12 x or 24x Scope;..... we see better! Not to mention Walking back and forth to the 50 vs the 100 lets us get the heart beats down quicker! ( So we can shoot better!)
On the bad side our Groups at 50 yards do not always equate to x2 @ 100 yards ( why : because we can't ...See as well, Our Heart beat is amplified after walking the extra distance & Most of us plain base shooters are too frugal...we only load enough powder to get the job done at the 50!)

Agreed. My eyes have gone from perfect to ruddy in the last ten years. My short vision went. I'd like to blame computer screens but to be fair, it's presbyopia. (Yes, old age here too.) I can't read anything these days without cheaters. Well any way, I'll see what 50 yards yields with the 470.

Interesting flat pointed bullet. Ben, is your copy tapered? I have an Ideal 311467 and the bands up near the nose are tapered. This is a very accurate bullet in an 1898 Krag rifle. I seat it well out so tapered bands are fully engraved when chambering.

The bands on a 311467 and 311466 are not tapered like those on the #315 where almost each band is a different dia.,
but rather the two top bands mike .304 and the rest .314 ( at least on mine).
The 311407 has .314 bands all the way, that is why the 407s are tougher to seat without going below the case neck in most rifles.
The exception , NOE 407 Mod.
And of course the 467 and 466 are pointed and the 407 and 407 Mod are FP.

Why doesn't Ben shoot of to the side instead of ruining all those targets?
