If the wood for the blocks is a hard wood, then 1/8" space on each side of the block would do. Basically, the width of a table saw blade when you split the block in half. If the wooden blocks are softer and a bit more compressible then a bit more. Some have mentioned just using flat blocks. This should work if your barrel has a reasonable taper to it. I felt compelled to glass bed my XP-100 barrel blocks because the tapers just silly. Good Luck with your project.With all of the comments so far I have 2 questions.
Wherever I am going to put the barrel vice at. How much smaller than the dia. of the barrel should I make the hole in the oak block?
Ian said that they bead blast for clean up. And in the process little particles get imbedded on the leading edge of the barrel nut. After I separate the action from the barrel. Should I take the barrel nut off of the barrel towards the muzzle or towards the chamber to reduce any damage to the barrel threads?
