Is it normal for suppliers in your area to carry 8 pounders? Or do you have to order it? Like I said, I've never even seen an 8 lbs jug in person!
LGS carries a few 8 pounders. Not necessarily the flavor wanted. I'll use the LGS for single pound purchases and then make large purchases from online sellers. Got to realize that most customers of LGS that reload, use jacketed bullets so the powders they stock might not be cast bullet friendly.

I accidentally saw how much an 8# jug of one of my favorites was going for at a "mail-order" supplier I've used since the mid eighties and who's prices have always been very good.

An 8# jug of powder costs more than some of my guns! In fact, it was almost as much as the last gun I bough (new) last spring.

I did see a surplus powder on GI Brass, which was "comparable to Unique" which was about $21/#, purchased in an 8 jug. That was sans shipping and "hazmat."

Speaking of breaking down 8# jugs, I'm kicking myself for having finally tossed a bunch of Accurate Arms 1# containers this spring. Those were about the most compact and efficient size. I can actually get 2# of several powders in a clean, new 1QT motor oil bottle, but I still like the compact AA bottles. They may even hold the same amount as an oil bottle, but the short form is nicer for stacking/organizing.

I'd have to drive a hour to an hour and a half to buy powder over the counter, so I've bought most of my powder online since the origin of the $2 "hazmat" fee. Often, combined orders with someone else to defray shipping costs. Nothing against the LGSs - just don't have any close.

I’ve been lucky enough to trip into some deals on 4 and 8 pounders. I just watch for sales. I know locally where an eight pounder of H110 is on sale for $179 right now. I don’t need it/want it, but if I owned a plethora of magnum revolvers, and didn’t already have an eight pounder of 2400(which is an immensely more versatile powder), I might jump on it.

I shoot the 357 Mag and Max in carbines, so I'd probably not be able to resist that. Not my favorite, but it's a good powder for that. I stumbled onto 300MP during that last drought for less than H110 was BEFORE the drought and snatched it up. I've used very little of it and it will likely last me the rest of my life, but, yeah, if 2400 were available at that time, I'd have preferred it for the same reasons.

Funny story,
A friend called me from a gunshow last weekend. He said he was eyeing a minty older, blue 6" S&W Mod 57 (he didn't know I already had one). He said it was only $1500 (ONLY $1500!) and he was pretty sure he was gonna buy it, but wanted to know if I'd be interested in it, if he changed his mind about keeping it, after he got it home...He said that'd clinch the deal for him if I wanted it, cux it's such a good deal. He knows I tend to buy most any 41 mag gun. I said I wasn't interested, as I already had one. ANYWAY, not too many years back, I had a 8 3/8" Mod 57 that I sold for the price of a 8 lber.

>>> edit: Jeff, after re-reading this, it doesn't really have much to do with your comment, LOL

Let's HOPE not!

As I read, I was cringing, thinking you were heading toward a premonition of $1500/8# jug of powder!

I just emptied a keg of Unique......glad I have 2@8#,1@4# .
Every 8# can of powder has cost more than the last rifles or shotguns I bought. The untouched 1918 1917 I probably paid too much for but it's street value is more than I paid for it now so there's that ....

Dad about choked when I told him I saw 8# of Unique on sale at $109 .....I think I paid 119 for the last one I bought . 189 for the 8# 4350 and 196 for the 8# 322 and 4198 but primers were only 32/1000 in days of yore . You know back in the early teens .

Why start keeping on subject now. That stopped about 6 pages ago. Heck I started the thread and I have been drifting all over it myself. LOL

Typical Old Man conversation. Just like sitting on the bench outside the general store.:)

Powder online is becoming more and more readily available. Some primers are starting to come down a bit too. I’ve seen them for $69 a brick for SP with no limits. Still not great prices but it’s moving in the right direction.

I picked up 2000 Winchester WLR primers yesterday for $41.00 per K.

My local Sportsman’s Warehouse is down the hill and across the street from the Hospital that my wife is in. She wanted to nap, I needed a walk, and the sun was out.

I was looking at their powder selection, the young man who was stocking the shelves asked me if I needed primers. I asked him what he had. He said he “only” had the WLR’s. I asked him how much they wanted for them. He checked the price. $41.00. I asked him if he was sure that they could sell the bricks, and if i could buy two (they still have the rationing signs up stating only 200 primers per day allowed). He wasn’t breaking them down into just the 100 piece sleeves. His answer with a big smile was “Well you can try!”, so I grabbed two boxes and headed for the front counter. There were three checkers working, I picked the youngest, most naive looking one of the three. She rang me up. I paid.

I was shocked, I felt like I had just pulled off a heist.

One box is for my buddy who just bought an RCBS JR press at a yard sale. He has saved up a few hundred pieces of 300 Win Mag brass. Everything I have read is the the Winchester WLR primers are pretty hot and will work just fine with most powders in the 300. The other brick is for me, to bring my stock back up.

Now I just need some SP primers.

Well back to the subject of the 1911.
Got a care package today from @CWLONGSHOT . Thanks!!!!
It was delivered to my neighbor a couple days ago. He just brought them over with my water bill.

So now I will be able to figure out what the Girsan likes to eat.

Now just to aquire some dies. And head up to Canton to get some large pistol primers.

Ps.
CW, I really like the micro checkering job on the bases. You aight to trade mark that. Micro checkered for better pressure dispersion. :)

If something does not pop up I can get a set of Lees down the street for 65 bucks.
I just have to wait till the finances straighten back out after the first.
