My buddys son in law works for a municipality. Apparently he came across a bunch of solder and decided to melt it i to one chunk and give to me.

It appears much was rosin core. Its deep Grey and has that "look".

Is it salvageable as bullet lead? Its about 20# worth.

It's probably 60/40, so would be good to sweeten up pure pb, but I wouldn't use it solo

well, if it really was solder, then it's either 95% tin
OR
50 to 60% tin and the balance is lead
OR
a mix of the above.

What I'd do, is conduct a melt/freeze temp of your batch, then you'll better know how to use it.

Good ta hear and thanks guys.
Never used rosin core before. (Im only assuming its in there as I was told it was old "plumbers stuff")

Yes on it also likely alotta tin. I know thats OK. Having been told its old stuff I hoped it might be from before alot of tin was in solder.

But as Bret & Fiver said, it was free!

Not sure I understand your comment about hoping it was old and therefore had less tin. All of the old solder I have managed to accumulate has had a considerable percentage of tin in it, ranging from a low of 35% to a high of 70%. I have rolls of solder, and a fair amount of bars of solder. I have auto body bars and plumbing bars. Some of the coolest ones have raised lettering on them that say, "City of Chicago", on them.

I have always considered tin to be a valuable commodity and back when I could get it for 5 bucks a pound I gobbled up a bunch of it. I used the most in my BPCR bullets ranging from 1 in 20 to 1 in 30. My schuetzen bullets were all 1/20.

Rosin is useful as a flux and I always found sawdust from soft wood high in resin/rosin fluxed the best. I think you are very lucky to score that 20 lbs. and as fiver says, treat it as 50/50 and blend from there. If there if 10 lbs. of tin in there that should be worth at least 150 bucks, then 10 lbs of pretty good pure lead for another 20 bucks. I'd be getting my buddy's son a case of beer!

Since you know it is only lead and tin, you could do a hardness test on ingots of the various ratios and get a good idea of the tin content. That is something that can be done when melting wiped joints on lead pipe.

Congratulations, that sounds like a heck of a score. You might consider sending a sample to BNE from over CB.GL to have tested.

i have a 5 gallon bucket of 1 lb ingots . my dad (RIP) made them when he was melting down lead service lines (water lines). i use them for muzzleloader balls and to sweeten up the alloy.

Holy buckets!!! Is Tin really as expensive as what you guys are saying.
Since I am getting out of casting I offered my Pewter and pure tin on CB to anyone in the metro St. Paul Minn area for 3$ a lb
I had also listed all of my lead for 1$ a lb. but so far no takers.

For branded alloy that's about right . Certified should be expected to be more .

Certified alloys whether lead or tin are about half the price/# of silver/oz . Makes it semi precious metals ...... babbitt is more/# than 99.99 silver/oz .

Yeah, it was a few weeks ago, I tried selling some COWWs for pickup in MN, have 500 lbs I needed to move from it's storage spot. I got a couple replies that said "too far to drive" and one low-ball reply, all of which just made me find a alternative way to store. Maybe I'll make another go of it during the local gunshow in Sept? There are some casters in this area, they're seemingly just as cheap as I am, LOL.

Cheap is hardly the only reason to cast. I started casting and then continued to get what I wanted and not what someone else wanted to sell me. I've never cast a single bullet with the intent of saving money, if I did I no doubt would have far fewer tools and gadgets.
