Mold History

Going through some of my old reloading manuals I find Lyman molds that are no longer in production. Also molds by Ideal. Has anyone wrote a book on the history of these old molds? It would be a shame if their history was lost.

There is a very good history of Lyman/Ideal moulds in the 46th Edition of the Lyman Reloading Handbook.

If anyone is the keeper of the knowledge on mold designs, I think it may be Glenn himself. I have learned
a lot from his many articles over at the LA Silhouette Club site. Perhaps Ben and Glenn to
have a mold museum challenge. :)

So, if the 46th Lyman is what Glenn recommend - it must be a real resource.

I dunno if Glen is very up on bullet molds. After all he only has 400+ of them, next to Glen I'm a real light weight with only a mere 75.

Will sort through my molds soon and post the ones I wish to sell.

Also will check out the Link

Just finished reading the chapter in Lyman #46 and found it very informative indeed. Wish there was more.

Has anyone had any experience with the NOE 311-230FN Black Out bullet? It looks interesting. I'd be sending it down a 1 in 10" twist barrel at about 1550.

Thank you, Sendaro

Sendaro,

I realize that you're inquiring about the NOE 311-230FN Black Out bullet . I don't have that mould but I do have this Accurate mould that is similar.

I shot my 240 gr. Accurate .30 cal. plain base at 50 yards.
Rifle was a Tikka, 30-06 Springfield.

Here are the test targets. I shot ( 4 groups with 5 rounds in each group ) Range was 50 yards. ( on the 8.0 gr. load , I had to expend 2 rounds to get the rifle hitting near the bull , therefore , the 8.0 grs. of Unique load only had 3 rounds in the target.)

The bullets were sized .3115 " lubed with Ben's Red and rolled in thinned 45-45-10 and allowed to dry for 2 days.

I did a " ladder test ", shooting 8.0 Alliant Unique with the 240 gr. bullet, 8.5 grs. of the same, 9.0 of the same, and finally 9.5 grs.

As far as I'm concerned it looks like 8.0 of Alliant Unique is the clear winner in the accuracy dept.

I can see some " tipping " on the 8.5 gr. test target, possible a bit of it on the others also. The 9.5 gr. target seems to show less / if any tipping.

It is my opinion that at the velocity that I was shooting these hvy. weight .30 cal. cast bullets at out of my Tikka , 30-06 that my particular bullet is " right on the edge " of what my barrel can stabilize.

I have that mould. I have only used it in my 7 twist 300 BO. I run them around 1050 and they shoot well enough.

Ben,
Thank you for sharing your experience with this bullet. I assume that the twist in your Tikka is a 1 in 10". I have a 1 in 10" twist in the barrel I've thought about trying NOE 230 Black Out in. However I was intending to push the bullet at 1400 to 1550 fps. I have to agree with you that the 8 grain load of Unique shot a nice looking group. Have you thought about trying a little more velocity?

Brad, I'm of the understanding that the bullet may have been designed with it being used at sub-sonic velocity. I'm wondering how it would act if pushed to 1400 to 1550 fps for shooting at ranges of 200 yards and beyond.

Ben, And Brad Would like to hear your thoughts on this bullets use at extended ranges.

Thanks, Sendaro

Sendaro ,

Yes, I " assume " that my Tikka , 30-06 is a 1-10.
My bullet is a plain base , it ( in my opinion ) won't tolerate too swift of a kick in the rear end.

I doubt that any of my loads that you see above in the test targets broke 1,050 fps.
I may move things forward to around 1,400 fps and see what happens.

Good Shooting,

Ben

Ben, Please keep me posted if you push it to the 1400 fps zone. I would opt for the GC version of the 311 230 BO if I make purchase.

Thank you, Sendaro

Sendaro,

I bought my Accurate brass mould a few years ago on a " whim ".
I was not particularly interested in the plain base 240 gr. , 30 cal., but it was all part of the " package deal " on the mould.

I've really enjoyed shooting it younger brother, ( that you see on the left of the 240 ) the 180 gr. Plain Base.

I can keep three different caliber weapons going with only one mould, if need be.

Ben, Interesting mold! The 311 PB little brother looks well designed. Thanks for sharing.
