Sept. 10, 2021 Steve left us. You are missed.
What's the difference between 35 Whelen and Ack Imp?

I believe the standard Whelen retains the orig. 17 degree 30 min. shoulder angle.

The Ack Imp case is blown out and has a 40 degree shoulder angle.

Jim,

You wanted to see the cartridge, here it is :

Ben ..I do have a question ..when first looking at the cartridge it occurred to me that with such a square shoulder seating a bullet and /or crimping could easily invert the neck...does that ever happen or is the shoulder so small and brass so thick that it withstands the pressure..?

I owned the rifle prior to selling it to Jason.
I never had anything like that happen to me.
At the same time, let me say that I'll remove the bell when loading and seating a cast bullet, but since it is being fired in a single shot I never put a heavy crimp on any of the rounds.

There is an old wives tale out there that says there isn't enough shoulder to head space the round and that you'll get a lot of misfires with the Whelen.

NOT TRUE !

No personal experience, but from what I understand you have to run the '06 case neck out to a .411 Hawk before headspace becomes any kind of concern.

I've never had a problem with regular 35 or 40 Whelan and head space with an 03 action. The extractor will hold the case against the bolt face tight enough for firing. Plus the Springfields have the highest mass/energy firing train until the Win Mod 70 was made. If a primer will fire, they will fire it.

Good morning
We shoot two 375 Whelens. If you look at the cartridge specs. The 375 and 400 Whelen specs show the brass at the neck base is a larger diameter than the 06. Reloaders run into problems when their dies are over sizing the brass to less diameter than the chamber.
Never had this issue as we just neck size and our brass stays the right diameter.

Dan, I had the same question! Would not be prudent to over
anneal the necks, to prevent inversion I would think.

You are certainly correct with any kind of push feed action. Those big claw extractors have more functions than just pulling out cases.
