Al,

Yes, if throttle up past 1,400 fps or so with this one the fun will " head south " quickly.

No need for a hot plate with that one. About 5 pours and it will be plenty hot.

What loads are in the works Ben?

Not certain just yet about specific loads ?
I've got 100 ea. Starline's in a box just waiting to be loaded.
What would you recommend for this one ?
They will be shot in my 98' Mauser Siamese.

12gr Unique would be a load to try. Too, powders quicker than 4198 would be on the short list, so 4759 or AA5744.

4198/RE7 are as slow as I would go. Slower powders would mean more velocity and that means way more recoil than I would want. A 480 gr bullet at 1500 fps would not be very fun to shoot.

What Brad said. I haven't gone the pistol powder route with the 45/70, other than 2400 with some roundball loads I cooked up once.

I forgot that Ben had a Siamese Mauser. One of those likely manages recoil a bit better than a levergun or Ruger #1/#3.

the slow powders have a different recoil impulse.
they accelerate things but not with a snap.

I'm gonna say something I have never said before.
I would look at trail boss as a suitable powder here.

Trail Boss would be suitable as would blackpowder and BP substitutes like BH209, Hodgdon 777 and Alliant Black MZ.

Trailboss would work.

my favorite 45-70 load is 23 grains of SR4759, floral foam wad, 500grain RCBS plain base...Rolling Block Green Mountain Barrel 1-18 twist, S.S. trigger
I think this is the load a few of the Quigley shooters use, ones that shoot smokeless..same point of aim as 65 grs FF
my BIL shoots a H&R Buffalo Classic at a local Silhouette match, 100-200yds, using the Lyman 457124, with 21 grains of SR4759..he has done well with this load

I put my Cup Point pins in today and cast around 60-70 bullets.

I like the looks of cup vs. hollowpoint better. Should make an awesome hunting bullet.
I have the Noe rg version in the 360230 bullet and noticed the cup points were shooting nice groups right off the bat with the first couple of loads i tried with them. I want to work out a great load for them for next year's deer season.

My problem is there is zero SR 4759 around here.

I ran some QL numbers for Ben. If anyone is wondering a 100% case fill to base of bullet of H335 gives 47K PSI and about 1850 fps. Not my idea of fun.
Trailboss is hard to get much over 1000 fps but Unique and 2400 both look really good.

I've always had good results with Unique in lower level 45-70 (Trapdoor) loads. Accurate and easy on the shoulder.
