New lyman 12ga mold

i got a new 12ga 525 pellet mold coming net week. I used to have one and the 20ga one years ago. These were what started me off into the casting sickness. This was supposed to be NOS. The 20ga one was the one that took out my first chronograph. Had a void or something in the waist section and went almost all the way through the chrono.

These will be shot out of a rifled cantilever scoped barrel. I also have a smoothbore deer barrel but I tried in the past with it but it shot about 16" groups at 50 yards. I might try them again with the bases filled. I never tried that before. If you don't they tings smash down to half their length on firing. It is also why you have to use near pure lead as they can crack and fall apart if you don't. Might have been why the 20 ga one broke. I was using actual shotgun slugs for the lead last time. I sort them out when mining lead at the range.

I still have 25lbs of it stashed. I am going to have to start mining again as I was told our public range is closing and they are opening a new range you will have to pay at. Not sure how they are going to make you pay yet. Hopefully they will do a yearly instead of hourly. It looks like my free brass and lead are coming to an end

I have that mold. Killed several deer with it back when I still hunted with long guns. My best accuracy was with Universal. Push them slow. I was never able to get accuracy past 1250 fps or so. Cast of pure lead they are effective. Accuracy at 100 yards was poor. 50 yards was good which was fine where I hunt. Remington 870 with a Mossburg rifled barrel. I have seen 870's with a hole drilled and tapped through the barrel shank to add rigidity to the barrel but it never appealed to me. I always wondered how these slugs would do in a single shot or bolt action. Let us know how you get along.

I was able to get 3.5" groups out of my older Mossberg 9200 with a rifled barrel. The trick I found was to never used more than a once fired case. If you reloaded it again you lost about 150-175fps and the accuracy was not the same. I have several hundred new 2 3/4 and 3" hulls. What I don't have is anymore 4756. I am going to use Longshot and bluedot.

Hopefully it cast to size. If not I will knurl the front band to increase diameter to grab the wad. I am probably going to have to place a Ballistic products order. I have 2 bags of the original Win waa12r wads. They have been stored in the basement in a closed box so hopefully they don't blow out when loaded. Won't know till they are loaded. Old wads don't do well as they get old.

Blue Dot is also gone now like 4756... :(

I've never used it and never figured on using it, but it's sad and discouraging to see the old names go by the wayside as three or four "new" powders with cooler names crop up. Probably a lot good about the new powders, or some of them, but I'm fr less likely to try a pound of something when I have to drop $40 - $50 for the sake of curiosity.

I used to have one guy do my transfers, but never bought a gun from him, so every time I did a transfer, I'd always buy a pound of powder at his inflated rate - at least until he started charging more than $20/#. Easier to try something new when it doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

I completely agree.

Trail boss was a favorite.

4320 is my go to 308 Powder

4756 has been awesome for so many cast bullet
Loads.

Blue Dot is my go to 10mm and heavy 12g powder since I started loading them!

I luckily have a lil but of all of them. Trail Boss will be gone first followed by 4756.
I lucked into a 8# Blue Dot a few years back and had a couple 1# bottles on hand. But 4756 was always hard ta get and Trail Boss kinda slipped thru my fingers. I bought a carton cause I couldnt get a jug and sold a buddy two bottles about 2019 or so. Had two and a partial. Finished two bottles off in 2020. Been savin my last bottle since learning it was no more...
A buddy gave me a can of 4756 and PB last year. (Another fav thats gone)

Yeah, powders that are no more. I had an 8 pounder of 4759 when I heard it was discontinued and bought two more 8 pounders.

:headscratch:I just saw Blue Dot in stock, at one of the internet suppliers. I use to go though lot of Hercules Blue dot in 9mm and 357 Magnum with jacketed bullets.. So much so, that I purchased it by the 8# jug. Not anymore. Don't keep it around.

BTW, AA 2520 is still in stock at Powder Valley! So if it's discontinued, that's news to me.

I have the slug wad and it seems to be the AA12 or WWAA12F114 clone in a bluish plastic instead of white or yellowish. It doesn't seem any more stout than the F114.

blue dot is not discontinued. Everyone thinks it as it has not been available in a while. But IMR Blue was discontinued. Maybe thats what everyone was think of??? I don't have good luck with it in slugs. Seems too slow. But other have been switching to STEEL from BD and have been getting higher velocities but a dirtier burn. You know what I mean if you ever loaded steel shot with it.

Funny not how some can't find certain powders, while others have an abundance of those same powders. Most of Alliant powders are available to me locally, with some being hit or miss, but they eventually show up. That's a good thing, as I use many Alliant powders for both rifle and pistol loads, and they are still cheaper than any of the other available brands by fifteen to twenty dollars a lb.

One powder I like for HV cast lead loads is H4895, I have a few lbs. but it hasn't been around for a couple of years, so it's a dedicated powder at this point in time. I need to drop into the shop which I haven't been in for the past couple of months and check on product and prices.

If you're seeing Alliant powders that cheap, you need to buy all you can afford. New pricing on Alliant is more than IMR. Some of the Hodgdon and WW offerings are more reasonable in comparison.

Yup. H4198 and H4895 are unobtanium here and have been for most of the last 5+ years!!!!

I did some reading a d see what TB found and said. Lack of seeing and abundance of discontinued powders lead to miss information. I see BLUE discontinued. Well thats one I NEVER SAW EITHER! But understand its new? Now gone...

I really like Speer Bullets for hu ting but swore off them cause the buggers fudged me too many times discontinuing my favorite bullets. The 358/250 RN. The 308/165 RN. GONE...

I was able to locate ten boxes on the 30/165 RN and BOUGHT ALL! still have about 1/2 remaining its a dandy hunting bullet arpund my area. I switched to the Grand Slam in the 358 but they are hard ta find too.

So now when I find a bullet that works real good or I really like. I buy and retain a goodly supply based on use-age. To protect my work creating a good loading.

Currently, Hodgdon, IMR, WW and Vihtavuori powders are in the $50+ range Alliant powders around $35 +/- a couple bucks. Primers, I'm not even going there, just glad I don't have to worry about either for the forceable future.
