all of the Alliant powders around here are pushing the 50$ range, come only in one pound bottles and are real scarce.

all the guys down to the trap club laughed at me when i bought all the Promo they had for 200$ a Jug.
i then paid for it by selling them 'old style' clay's and a few other odds and ends for the same 200$ price 6 months later.
i did feel bad peeling off the 125$ sticker from a few, but not that bad, and they for sure think they got a good deal now.

some of the hodgdon powders here are still in the $30 range. some of the pistol ones anyway. All rifle powders are 45$+ no matter who's it is. I have been hitting our public range hard the last month to get brass to sell. Last fall I cashed in everything I had to get a new roof on the house. I had to borrow a friends trailer and skid loader to get the barrels on the trailer. But I paid for it. Now I am after powder and primers. And the two guns I just got this past month. Now I will concentrate on getting more primers and powders. Brass is really high here right now at one place. $2.05/lb. I am going to take advantage of the high price and get supplied back up.

Friday, received an 8# jug of W-231 delivered at $36/ pound, from Powder Valley. They were running the no HazMat Promotion. Tired of waiting on Unique. Every flavor is running $50/pound + tax at the LGS.

Well the guy sent me the wrong mold. He sent a ideal 12ga foster mold. And it was used but in good condition. These fosters don't work. They are too small for a regular barrel and too big to fit in a wad cup. Soo, waiting to hear back from him.

Well the right mold showed up today and I sent off the wrong one. This was truly a NOS mold. It had a 1995 inspection ticket in the box.

I got out a pair of handles and put the mold on the hot plate while I heated up the pot and emptied the alloy I had in there. That took about 30 min to heat up and empty the Lee 4-20. I then filled it with lead I melted down from roof sheathings. I had to turn the heat up one number on the dial to stop the spout from freezing up.

While that was heating back up I sprayed the mold and pin with some bake cleaner real quick to flush out anything that was left after the cleaning from earlier. It still took about 10 pours to get a good slug. I ended up casting about 60 of them to start out. I took 10 over to the scale and they were all 521.5gr-523.2grs.

Now I need to figure out which wads I will get. I have already settled on using the green brush wad from ballistic products. I will only need the shot cup off whatever wad I use. I have some claybuster waa12 wads that have the right height petals for the drive band on the slug. I have some of the waa12sl clones too but I think they might be a little short.

I just hope the wads I do have on hand are still good. I already tried some waa12r wads and they shredded to pieces. I used some slugs that were left over from the other mold I had years ago. It did not go well at all with those. The other wads I have are just as old as the ones that failed so I will have to try some and see. The thing is the ones that failed work good in some buck shot loads I did about 6 months ago. But the rifled barrel might be the problem.

Claybusters Windjammer clone has the right depth shotcup for the Lyman "pellet" and aren't as thick as the AA12 clone.

I do have some of them. But they are really thin. I need to put one in the wad and push it into the barrel to feel how tight it is. If they are too thin you don't get any grip and the slug will not be stable in flight.

Well everything has been a failure with this slug so far. The mold casts beautiful. But I can not get it to group. I tried using the shot cups off other wads and using the whole wad. Tried using nitro cards under the slugs and without. Noting is shooting better than 4"-5" at 50yds. My Russian Botfly slugs are shooting at 1.5" at 75 yds so I know the gun can shoot.

All the wads are tearing to pieces. I think they are just too old. They are still soft and pliable but who knows????
