New Ruger Super Wrangler

I never realized that the bore and groove diameters were .002 oversize for .22RF. I was never overly impressed with the accuracy of my Single Six. Might just have to slug that barrel.

I also must admit that I thought .22mag used the same barrel diameters as the .22RF.

My Single-Six Hunter uses only the 22 WMR cylinder. 22 Mag is a very different animal than the 22 LR, the Mag uses a .224" bullet that is NOT heeled, while the 22 LR is heeled and is .2225". Interestingly, they both run about the same MAPP specs pressure wise, the bigger boiler room on the Mag creates more gas volume at similar pressures.

At the casting bench in the sky. RIP Bret.
St Elmer once opined that the 22 Mag out of a handgun just about equaled the 22LR out of a rifle. Made sense to me.

15-20 years back people were trying to alter a 10-22 Ruger to use the 25ACP. Not sure whatever became of it. Around the same time others were attempting to form a centerfire version of the 25 Stevens Long out of Hornet brass. Ballistically the 25 Stevens and 25 Stevens Long crush the 22 LR. I know where there is a Stevens Marksman in 25 Long that I simply cannot pry out of the owners hands. Case forming would be a bear, but what a great small game/woods walking/tractor gun!

When my friend Buck Nowell passed away, in 2019, I helped his widow sell his firearms and shooting related collections. As a thank you, she gave me a gun that Buck had written about in the Fouling Shot - a Martini Cadet that had been rebored to .257, and chambered for .25 Hornet. I even got the mould that he modified specifically for this rifle. It's an RCBS 25-85 CM that he milled the base off of, to produce a 63gr plain base. Accurate, no recoil, very little noise - I love it!

I have 2 rifles in 25/20 WCF. What a fun caliber!

I have 3 bullets that get used here--Lymans #257420 and #257312 and RCBS 25-85-CM. Relevant to this discussion is the latter bullet, a plain base flatnose meant for CAS shooting. Once that bullet exceeds 1100 FPS, groups go Improved Cylinder; kept subsonic, they drive tacks and remain quiet, 6.0 grains of either IMR-4198 or RL-7 and Rem #6-1/2 primers do the trick. CCI #400 and WSR primers open groups markedly. I have yet to try SPM primers in place of the Rem 6-1/2s; the Rem caps are VERY hard to find locally and have been since forever, as have all Rem primers.

Those 85 grain flatnoses at 1050-1075 FPS are The 22 LR From Hell, in the opinion of ground squirrels and jackrabbits.

I have three .25-20 w.c.f.s so far. A Low wall, a Model 1892 Rifle, and a Model 25 Remington. If I can scrounge up a Model 23 Savage I will buy one. I shoot the RCBS 25-85-CM with only Ben's Liquid Lube and 6.7 grains of 4227, most of the time. I aim for the eye. Small game reacts like they have been swatted with a golf club.

My first centerfire rifle was a Winchester 1892 in .25-20, given to me by my uncle when I was 12 years old. It is long gone and I regret that.

Yup I like the 25/20 allot. My first was bought on a whim. I had bought my first Colt a 32/20 SAA and wanted a Win 92. A friend had a friend with a number if them and was willing to sell for what I had ta spend. Between the three if us, We just kept clashing for a good time and it took a few months. When we got together he only had a Browning 53 round bbl with a button mag not a octagon as I wanted. He showed me a gun like I wanted but it was a 25/20. We talked a while as he was a awesome guy. Just before saying good buys he offered that 25/20 at a price I couldnt say no to.

I knew the caliber but never owned one. Later I would have a Savage Bolt and Marlin Lever.

I use the Savage Bolt the most as its a great Coyote rifle for here. Close shots in woods its more quiet then the 22 Mag and 223 and seems ta roll them
Better too. I like the lil Speer 75g and 1680 better then the lighter 60's or 86's. I haven't used much lean it the gun sinply cause I have a bunch of the Speers and it shoots SO well.

Considering that I don't shoot a lot of .22 LR in a handgun, I believe I'll just stick with my Ruger Mark III Hunter :

CW--

That Speer 75 FN stays accurate past 1800 FPS in my marlin 94CL. Great bullet--are they still in production? I have 2.34 boxes of them left. It has to be a great mid-range rat bullet in the bigger 25s as well. They open like blooms on jacks.

I saw my first one at a LGS in Arizona Wednesday.
It had the Bronze finish so I didn’t ask to handle it. Next to it and very tempting was an old Single Six dovetail rear sight model for $340.
The Super Wrangler was priced at $360.
The Wrangler original model was $179.
