Solve the mystery

Johnny never said. He was asked and didnt respond.

I see no mystery. The bullets went under the target in a 2' group.
Funny story, that I probably posted about years ago.
When I first shot the Pre-64 Mod 70 (30-06), it shot 2' low at 100 yd, group size unknown, LOL.
It came equipped with iron sights only. Before I shot it, I mounted a scope on it, and bore sighted it at home. I go to the range, and I can't hit the target, until I move up the the 20 yard line.
Turns out that the original stock of this Mod 70 had a rubber thingy in the channel of the wood, pushing on the barrel.

i had a 91 Argie (gave it to my youngest son) that gave me fits like you had. i shot it at 50 yards and didn't hit the target. then i moved about 30 yards(20 yard target) and i could see why. the boolit tumbled and it went everywhere. i didn't slug the barrel....i already had two 91 Argies that boolit was sized .314", so i figured, what the heck. so i made some more and i sized them .315" and .316". i then shot it at 50 yards using .315 - .316" and it was right on the money.

I cast up a few more of the plain base ones. Powder coated these. They average.245 inch. Should I try them unsized??. Will be using Winchester wst this time and over the chronograph...

YES! If it will chamber, try them. Most of my 30 and 31 calibers use unsized bullets and with great results. I only "size" to lube them and add the GC, still being a traditional lube type of guy. If it drops .311 from the mould, a .311 die is used. Some guns just don't like this approach at all, but 5 shots should tell you if it's yea or nay.

this is one of the [many] great things about NOT using a bore ride design.
you simply seat the bullet .002 shorter.

Hoped to get out today. Weather is not helping me. Maybe in the morning Lord willing. I want to try these not sized. Anyway it was a good day for casting up some more of the same bullets. NOE 74 gr.

Tried the 245 powder coated today at 50 yards. Groups not to bad. Velocity was average of 1100 to 1140. Going to try the same loads with the bullets sized at .244. or maybe.243... Not bothering to check the bhn...just finished shooting at it just poured...

My guess it's wst - fast double based ball powder at an extreme low fill. Might try red dot if you got some.
