SR4759 and Lyman 311284

Dug out the last of a batch of 311284s I cast about 20 years ago and remembered it whot well in the '06 with a mid load of SR4759 which I still have a little of. SO I loaded up a few and shot them in my heavy .30-06 bench gun, holy cow, does that shoot well. Firgured no sense if saving it any longer, so used most of the old square steel can of it to load the last 86 of those bullets up, plan is to drive down to visit Dad tomorrow and go shooting. I've kind of been wanting to see how well this rifle shoots on a real solid bench on a range of exact known distance and with proper light (my range has shadows cast on the target a lot of the time).

I sure wish they'd start making SR4759 again, it was the best stuff going for cast rifle loads.

I could sell you an 8 pounder but I can't ship it, would need to be hand delivered all the way to the frozen tundra. That ain't happening.

Isn't 4759 the powder that they stopped making. It was very bulky and a small load really filled up big cases likie the 06. Or am I thinking of another powder. It was a 4 digit powder if it is not this one.

SR7625 is real good stuff in many things and meters well too, but this combo of the 311284 and 23.5 grains of SR4759 makes nice, tiny, consistent groups at 100 yards.

Wish I could get hold of that eight pounder of it. Whereabouts are you? Might be worth a road trip if there was something else of interest that way.

Take a trip to Tulsa, go to the gun show, the. Head over to see Rick. Only 4 hours or so away.
Gun show is amazing and HUGE! Rick, not so much.

Yep that is the one. In 2014 at the SHOT show, Hodgdon told me and 10 other people bought it in the 1990's. Plus it was expensive to make and the government was no longer buy it for 60mm grenade launchers.

I’ve never tried the legendary SR4759, as I’ve never has access to it here in Norway. But I’m very fond of a powder that is probably quite close in burn speed, and that is Vihtavuori N110. It works well without filler or powder positioning agents.
With lubed GC bullets in caliber-typical weight range:
-. 222rem 10-11grs
- .223rem 10-12grs
- 6,5x55 15-16grs
- 30/30 14-16grs
- .308win 18-19grs
- .30-06 18-20grs

With powder coated plain base, or check-less bullets, I typically increase load weight 5-10%.
If you can find some N110, it’s worth a try!

I still have most of a 8# jug of SR4759 powder, I purchased about ten years ago. Boringly accurate with cast in my bolt action, 308 Winchester. Not so much in my AR-10 carbine.................accurate loads won't cycle the action.

Been working with SR4759 in 44 Magnum Redhawk to use it up. Does pretty well at the 60 yard range distance. Can't recall the load offhand. IIRC, data is available in the older Lyman Cast Bullet manual. About the same results, with 5744 powder. Accurate's Number One Manual, has data.

Doing some reading around, besides 5744, guys are saying IMR4198 is pretty close, which is good because I have several pounds of it. Someone mentioned a powder called 300 MP (?), no experience or knowledge on that one.

Of course, 2400 is a stand by, but hard to find at the moment. I read somewhere that Ramshot Enforcer is a good sub for 2400 in magnum pistol loads, might be worth trying.

Thanks for the N110 idea, is that supposed to be a substitute for H110 by chance? I would think H110 wouldn't work well in reduced cast rifle loads with all we read about needing to have full load density for H110 and Win 296 to work, maybe (probebly) N110 is comeletely different.

Hodgdon H-110 and Vihtavuori N-110 reside in the same neighborhood in the burning rate charts, but are entirely different beasts.
N-110 is an extruded single- base powder that meters reasonably well, and in my experience work very well with reduced loads (and full tilt handgun magnum loads).

Very good to know. I'll keep an eye open for some. Honestly, where powders are concerned, I seem to reallt stick to old familiars and rarely try anything new. I was fortunate to have a good sized stock before the shortage hit. Ben has me really wanting to try some American Select if I can ever find some and that Ramshot Enforcer sounds promising as well. Now I can add N-110 to the list.

Best long range revolver groups I've ever shot was with Viht N-110 and cast, Freedom Arms 10" 41 Mag. 150 meter target, 5 shots, the high shot was a called flyer (the 5th shot, why do I always do that). The target is 8 inches high from the top of the leg to the back. Burris 12x from the bench.

I've had good success with all the Viht powders I've tried.
